No question -- coin dealers complain the least about their profession.

I cannot count the number of times that that clients who are doctors or (especially) lawyers tell me they want to chuck it all and become a coin dealer.

Strangely, now that I think of it, I don't recall any clients who were dentists saying that...

    Lawyers. They complain the least.

many of the dealers that post here the majority it seems don't like customers or non elite collectors.
They complain adnauseam and show a great deal of arrogance much of the time.

the common man is the vast majority of the collectors most of us are not the among the elite.
I specifically avoid ebay listings of at least 7 that post here and one dealer I would not even look at
there booth at a show. The dealer whine post are so tired and played now.

by far and away it is coin dealers that based on the post here that complain the most.

I'd vote for Coin Dealers complaining the least
about their profession (maybe not about the market!)

I know lawyers and doctors who complain about their choice
of professions; not as many dentists do, imo.

I've spent 43 years telling anyone who asks that I'm very
lucky to have turned a hobby into a profession for over
4 decades, never had a boring day in my life, and, realize
it's better than working at most office jobs....

I'd vote coin dealers are the most happy.

A lot of doctors are really unhappy these days. They spent a fortune for their education and many years of their lives to get certified, and now the government expects them to work long hours for low pay given their qualifications. My primary care doctor is very discouraged with the situation, and I don't blame him.

Love my job/profession (Radiologist) but after 30 years, it's become more of a grind. It was easier and more collegial when I had 10 partners instead of 35.

Being solo, whatever profession, looks pretty attractive to me now. image

No link, but I read somewhere that suicide rate among professionals is highest for dentists. Something about looking into peoples mouths all day, and inflicting pain on them.

California State Bar Journal, did a survey back in the 70's. The poll showed something like 75% of lawyers would leave the legal field if they could make the same amount of money doing something else. That's unhappiness.

Lawyers because they make the most money per transaction. Most of them make a killing but fact it they have to make a living like all of us. Coin dealers are probably 2nd, they make the most percent per transaction.

As a group doctors that specialize are first. Then dentists, followed by lawyers. Coin dealers are last.

One caveat is that doctors and dentist usually have a ceiling on their wonderful 1% incomes. Even the best of the best (ie Steadman Hawkins ortho clinic in Vail). Many lawyers can make A rod money. Personal injury firms regularly getting 40% of wrongful death, medical mal, and severe PI accidents live like kings.

My complaints are limited to how people treat others, in any profession. As the lawyer prods, the dentist probes, and the doctor prescribes, I complain and submit.

I think Broadstruck found the right question,
and received the answer we (as dealers) would
    have expected.

Although I've been a collector since age 8,
    and a full-time dealer for over 42 years, I
can't imagine, nor have any interest in, retiring.

    Slowing down a bit? Yes

Going to few less shows? Yes

Taking a Friday (or Monday) off in the future? Yes

    Retiring? NO

If the practice of medicine didn't suck big time, due almost entirely to extraneous forces outside the control of physicians, then you would hardly ever hear physicians complaining about their profession. Especially guys like me, who have lived through the "glory days" of the 80s and 90s. Most physicians I know cannot get out soon enough! So, when asked at a coin show how everything is going, my reply is "I have grown to hate my profession with every fiber of my being---but everything else in my life is terrific"!

There is a family practice physician by me who quit working at the clinic/hospital, opened an office in a 2 room building. She does not accept insurance, cash only. Sends people over to the clinic for blood work if needed. She tells me it is the best thing she ever did. She sets her own schedule, always has patients, and hardly any of the BS. Kind of reminds me of a chiropractor office set up. It is amazing how many people would rather pay cash when given the option. People are getting a receipt from her and then taking the money out of their health savings account to pay for the visit. I think she is on to something here with the new high deductible health plans with the HSA's. She is undercutting the clinic by more than half just by doing cash only but without the administration, overhead or insurance headaches.

That's a great idea, I'd be all over that. >>

Unfortunately for me if I had to pay cash I would be dead but for most minor things like a cold I could see this being a good idea and if she got one more room she could open a small coin store right there also. My dentist is an older guy and only does work now when absolutely necessary and seems very happy about it.

I would guess dentist, because the money is good, and most dentists I know, including my father in law (now retired), work 4 days a week. My mother in law is a tax attorney and she still works, but I think she just doesn't want to retire. My wife has a law degree, but I couldn't convince her to go into a lucrative private practice. I was lucky to get her to get a judgeship.

All three of the professions listed (Dr., JD and DDS) come with the community respect aspect, which means a lot. Think about it, how many mothers wouldn't want their daughter to marry a doctor, lawyer or dentist?

As someone above mentioned, members of the big 3 professions make too much money to get off the treadmill. As a lawyer, I know how hard it is to remove the golden handcuffs. My goal is to squirrel away enough money that I can retire comfortably by age 54. Maybe then I can do what I want. Maybe even become a coin dealer. Ha!

There are many reasons that the practice of medicine "sucks big time". No need to go into that here. Suffice to say that my strong desire to leave the practice of medicine has resulted in my decline in involvement in coin collecting. I still enjoy the coin hobby but have decided that my time and capital are better off elsewhere, at least for now.

I forgot to mention - she has no nurse, no medical assistant, no medical transcriptionist, does all prescriptions using a paper prescription pad and her only employee is a front desk secretary to schedule appointments, mail correspondence, file hand written charts, and take payments. The doctor does the whole assessment from start to finish. She comes out to greet you, weighs you, takes your vitals and then actually spends time with you. The first office visit is an hour long and then subsequent visits are about 30 minutes if needed. It is actually like stepping back in time. When the secretary is on vacation or at lunch, the doctor even handles the front desk. If you have something she can't handle, she just refers you back to the clinic.

I don't think she is making a killing but she is making a nice living, enjoys helping people, and has little to no stress from her job.

Probably coin dealer because of those three professions people become coin dealers almost always by their own choice. Not many people find themselves forced into becoming a coin dealer. I can't say the same for those other professions.

Being in an Asian family has lots to do with it but in my extended family I can name three people who were forced, coerced or persuaded into becoming dentists and doctors.

My dentist just hung up his vice grips a few weeks ago. He just turned 86 years old and decided to kick back and try to have some fun. He was a no frills, no BS kind of guy. My last trip to him was for a extraction, have 2 cavities filed and a little cleaning. From the time I walked thru the door until I walked out was about 35 minutes. He did have a grumpy nurse that had been with him since the 70's. I would BS with him as long as possible before he fired up the drill as he would want to start about 30 seconds after the last shot. My total bill was 78 bucks.

A lot of lawyers struggle to make a living now days, but the same can be said for the other 3 on the list here.
