Does anyone know if the 1793 Cent was a Chain, Liberty Cap or Wreath Cent?

This is the only close-up photo of coins from the time capsule that I have found from media sources, apparently so because of tight restrictions on how the contents could be photographed at the press conference after the contents were removed. So far none of the mainstream media has provided a detailed accounting of each coin, and it appears that the committee involved in the proceeding did not have the sense to invite a professional numismatist to the table to provide accurate and detailed information to the media This photo suggests that the coin in the upper left would be a Flowing Hair half dollar, adjacent to a 1787 Massachusetts cent. The coin in the center appears to be a Flowing Hair dime. Also note how the tray containing these coins is lined with either a Coin Armor bag, or a sheet of the material used to construct those bags.

I have been surprised at the lack of detail released on these coins... surely they would have a numismatist look at them.... Cheers, RickO

They should have had a numismatist and photographer with them when they opened the stupid box. The reporting from the 1850s when they opened the box was MUCH MUCH better with regards to the content than the reporting of today. It is really quite pathetic.

According to the Aug. 17, 1855, issue of the Barre Patriot, Barre, Mass., found in the box when it was opened then were two Massachusetts cents and half cents of 1787 and 1788; U.S. cents of 1793 and 1794; a New Jersey cent of 1787; “an old halfpenny of the time of George the Second”; a U.S. half dollar and half dime of 1795; a Pine Tree shilling “of the currency established in Massachusetts in 1652”; and “a copy of a small medal struck in England in 1794 in honor of Washington,” bearing head and bust of Washington and the inscription, “George Washington, born Virginia, Feb. 11, 1732.” The article said that the coins were still in good shape, and were transferred to a new box along with some newspapers and copper and silver coins of 1855.

It also detailed the inscription found upon the original time capsule as placed there by Adams, Revere and others:

“‘This corner stone of a building, intended for the use of the Legislative and Executive branches of the Government of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, was laid by His Excellency, Samuel Adams, Esq., Governor of said Commonwealth, assisted by the most Worshipful Paul Revere, Grand Master, and the Right Worshipful William Scollay, Deputy Grand Master, the Grand Wardens and Brethren of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, on the 4th day of July, A.D. 1795, A.L. 5795. Being the XXth anniversary of American Independence.’”

So sad we only have the 1855 REPORTING to go by.

I agree.

It makes me question the overall ability of the team doing the examining in that, the coins would most certainly have more value than a paper or an etching. Exactly what are these people THINKING?

I recently read that Kraljevich was evaluating the coins from the "Time Capsule." I can't imagine a better expert to consult.
