Pogue Coin Viewing report - 3/15 update - new PCGS labels!
Yesterday, I visited Sothety's galleries (71st & York) where the entire May sale and highlights from future sales are bring shown. The exhibit is absolutely amazing and well worth seeing. The highlights that are being exhibited in the display includes the 1822 half eagle, 1804 class 1 dollar, 1794 dollar (MS-66+), 1793 Chain cent ( MS-65 RB), 1829 half eagle (MS-66+) and the 1795 sliver plug dollar (MS-65+). There were many other highlights of equal importance but way too many to list here.
Also, there was the May sale in its entirety. All I can say is holy crap! More amazing coins! Being auctioned off in May is the draped and capped bust half dimes which includes a 1792 half disme in 64, draped bust dimes, draped and capped bust quarters (including many proofs) draped bust half dollars and the early quarter eagles through 1808. BTW the 1808 quarter eagle is MS-65 and is a WOW coin. Besides the Pogue coins at Sotheby's the room has excellent paintings for George Washington and Ben Franklin and many old historic American Flags.
In my humble opinion, many of the bust quarters are far superior to any quarters that I have seen offered ever! The proof bust quarters includes the proof 1820, 1821, 1822 25/50 and 1827/3 and many more.
The 1794 Dollar is graded 66+ from the Lord Oswald pedigree. Up close and personal with this coin, shows absolute originality and blew my mind off. I think that each coin blew my mind off. The Pogue's acquired many of these coins way back when offered at the Garrett, Eliasberg and Norweb auctions.
Several folks from Stack's were there to answer any questions that we may have had and as friendly as can be.
My recommendation - if you are near in NYC, then its definitely worth the visit. If not, some of the May coins being offered are on coinfacts and will be shown at upcoming shows. Go for it - Thank you very much Stacks!!!

I just wish they had regular inserts. The gold color is distracting, and a bit like gilding the lily.

I was completely blown away by the quality of these coins. Absolutely amazing dollars, half dollars, quarters, dimes and half dimes. Oh and a few gold and copper pieces thrown in as well. I have seen a few amazing coins of each series over the years, but these coins take amazing to a new level.
If you collect any of these series you owe it to yourself to spend a few hours examining these jewels. It will completely change your perspective on what these coin were intended to look like. I don't think I will ever see nicer examples.

These coins are amazing to view and if you are so fortunate to own all the better. In order to make these very best coin special PCGS and Stacks developed a gold label. I am confident that if you don't like the gold label, then I am sure our hosts will reholder any of these coins to the regular label for $10.
Yes - Don I completely agree with you and your comments about these coins. These are the best of the best and many haven't been displayed or shown to the public since the Eliasberg, Norweb or Garrett auctions when Pogue purchased some of the coins. This is a lifetime event to obverse and see so many of these early series in such high grade - even if you can't afford to acquire one!
thanks for posting this!
@DonWillis
great news! i'll be viewing these for sure. i can't wait.
However, I don't understand why they chose a special label that is reflective gold foil that distracts so much from these unique coins. Also, black lettering on gold is harder to read than the regular labels.
Just my opinion.....maybe too little coffee this morning.

The labels have been changed since the FUN show - they are not reflective anymore.

<< <i>I noticed that the OP did lot viewing on Saturday. I am wondering if this is generally possible? I live in NJ and would gladly come in on Saturday or Sunday for this. Is weekend lot viewing by appointment only?

It's an exhibit and all the coins are in showcases. You are able to see each and everyone of the coins very well. I don't recall when the exhibit closes and leaves for long Beach do before trucking into nyc call Sotheby's. I am sure Stacks will have a special lot viewing in nyc but no dates nor times behave been released. If you appreciate terrific bust material you really don't want to miss seeing These beauty! Hope this helps.
Many here I will never see -- except for your post.
Wow . .

<< <i>Wow. Hope some of these are at the ANA in Portland. >>
Yes, it would be my only chance to see the Pogue coins.

<< <i>Is Stacks submitting any or all of these coins to CAC before the auction? >>
Yes, at FUN they did have the cac stickers but since they were reholdered by pcgs. I suspect Stacks will get the cac stickers again prior to the auction.
<< <i>I'll take the 1794 $1. >>
I would have a hard time picking. I would have to think about it for a while.
<< <i>The chain cent is RB! Wow! >>
Not being the picky sort I'll be happy to win either of the 1793 cents.

I took several more pics yesterday than the ones I posted above and will post them later tonight for your viewing pleasure....stay tuned for some more coins that will blow your socks off!!!
PS: please post some pics of the reverses, too! Much appreciated~

Pics of the coins as viewed in the holder definitely give a different and more real "coin in hand" perspective, however as these coins were all in display cases and unable to be removed, I'm afraid there are no reverse pics to be seen.
<< <i>thanks for posting the pics. I was surprised (not really) that there isn't a teaser on the website. C'mon, Stack's! You got the coins, let us see them online! >>
checked again today (January 19th). Not there yet. Seems this is the more important teaser:
You can't make this stuff up!
