Pogue Coin Viewing report - 3/15 update - new PCGS labels!

Yesterday, I visited Sothety's galleries (71st & York) where the entire May sale and highlights from future sales are bring shown. The exhibit is absolutely amazing and well worth seeing. The highlights that are being exhibited in the display includes the 1822 half eagle, 1804 class 1 dollar, 1794 dollar (MS-66+), 1793 Chain cent ( MS-65 RB), 1829 half eagle (MS-66+) and the 1795 sliver plug dollar (MS-65+). There were many other highlights of equal importance but way too many to list here.
Also, there was the May sale in its entirety. All I can say is holy crap! More amazing coins! Being auctioned off in May is the draped and capped bust half dimes which includes a 1792 half disme in 64, draped bust dimes, draped and capped bust quarters (including many proofs) draped bust half dollars and the early quarter eagles through 1808. BTW the 1808 quarter eagle is MS-65 and is a WOW coin. Besides the Pogue coins at Sotheby's the room has excellent paintings for George Washington and Ben Franklin and many old historic American Flags.

In my humble opinion, many of the bust quarters are far superior to any quarters that I have seen offered ever! The proof bust quarters includes the proof 1820, 1821, 1822 25/50 and 1827/3 and many more.
The 1794 Dollar is graded 66+ from the Lord Oswald pedigree. Up close and personal with this coin, shows absolute originality and blew my mind off. I think that each coin blew my mind off. The Pogue's acquired many of these coins way back when offered at the Garrett, Eliasberg and Norweb auctions.
Several folks from Stack's were there to answer any questions that we may have had and as friendly as can be.
My recommendation - if you are near in NYC, then its definitely worth the visit. If not, some of the May coins being offered are on coinfacts and will be shown at upcoming shows. Go for it - Thank you very much Stacks!!!

For your viewing pleasure

I saw these at FUN and certainly breathtaking. Almost every coin a fantasy for any of us to own.

I just wish they had regular inserts. The gold color is distracting, and a bit like gilding the lily.

For all you West Coasters, these coins will be on display during the Long Beach show.

I was completely blown away by the quality of these coins. Absolutely amazing dollars, half dollars, quarters, dimes and half dimes. Oh and a few gold and copper pieces thrown in as well. I have seen a few amazing coins of each series over the years, but these coins take amazing to a new level.

If you collect any of these series you owe it to yourself to spend a few hours examining these jewels. It will completely change your perspective on what these coin were intended to look like. I don't think I will ever see nicer examples.

These coins are amazing to view and if you are so fortunate to own all the better. In order to make these very best coin special PCGS and Stacks developed a gold label. I am confident that if you don't like the gold label, then I am sure our hosts will reholder any of these coins to the regular label for $10.

Yes - Don I completely agree with you and your comments about these coins. These are the best of the best and many haven't been displayed or shown to the public since the Eliasberg, Norweb or Garrett auctions when Pogue purchased some of the coins. This is a lifetime event to obverse and see so many of these early series in such high grade - even if you can't afford to acquire one!

I love PCGS. They are great at so many things.
However, I don't understand why they chose a special label that is reflective gold foil that distracts so much from these unique coins. Also, black lettering on gold is harder to read than the regular labels.
Just my opinion.....maybe too little coffee this morning.

The labels have been changed since the FUN show - they are not reflective anymore.

I noticed that the OP did lot viewing on Saturday. I am wondering if this is generally possible? I live in NJ and would gladly come in on Saturday or Sunday for this. Is weekend lot viewing by appointment only?

It's an exhibit and all the coins are in showcases. You are able to see each and everyone of the coins very well. I don't recall when the exhibit closes and leaves for long Beach do before trucking into nyc call Sotheby's. I am sure Stacks will have a special lot viewing in nyc but no dates nor times behave been released. If you appreciate terrific bust material you really don't want to miss seeing These beauty! Hope this helps.

So I took EastonCollection's advice and took a ride into Sotheby's this rainy NY afternoon and spent a few hours gazing (and drooling) at the Pogue coins. I also enjoyed talking to Larry Stack and Greg Cohen for quite a bit who were really nice in telling me about several coins in the Pogue collection and even taking a few out for me from the display cases. Words cannot describe these coins!!! They just need to be seen in person to truly understand and appreciate their beauty. I took a whole bunch of pics but of course I was particularly enamored by the bust halves which were mouth watering especially the unbelievable 1807 Large Stars in 66 and 1815/2 in 65. The 1808 67 was beautifully toned! I've never seen an 1817/4 in person and so I had to also take some pics of that one and the incredible 1822 PR65+CAM. And I took some close ups as well of the chain and wreath cents...which were unrea!!! Sorry for the quality of the pics. This was all I could do with my iphone.

Yes, at FUN they did have the cac stickers but since they were reholdered by pcgs. I suspect Stacks will get the cac stickers again prior to the auction.

I would take all the bust quarters and draped bust dimes. Also throw in a 1804 dollar and 1793 cent. Ah heck, I will take the whole thing!

Additionally, for those of us who can't go and view the collection in New York or at the coming shows. It appears that Stacks posted the sets in the PCGS Set Registry. Obviously, the all-time finest rankings for Half-Dismes, Early Dimes, Quarters, and Halves has now changed. Then for your viewing pleasure, every coin has been Tru-Viewed.

Awesome coins, thanks for posting "real life" type of pics, I'm sure the true-view glamour shots will be spectacular, however, it's nice to get a feel for the "presence" of these coins in natural lighting conditions.

PS: please post some pics of the reverses, too! Much appreciated~ image

    Baley, I totally agree.

Pics of the coins as viewed in the holder definitely give a different and more real "coin in hand" perspective, however as these coins were all in display cases and unable to be removed, I'm afraid there are no reverse pics to be seen.

The coins are great but not fond of the gold foil labels since they are generally used on ground or shipwreck salvaged coinage.

Actually, I feel the gold label is very classy and shows off the importance for each of these coins. Every coin is a trophy coins! Personally I think pcgs and stacks did a great job with the holders. PS - if you are fortunate enough to win one or more of these coins and you don't like the gold label, I am sure that pcgs will reholdered the coin for $10.

The Pogue collection of draped & capped bust quarters are truly spectatular and are the creme DE LA creme! I never saw a better run of absolute amazing display of quarters in my life and don't expect it to ever be matched again. Besides having them in mint state, Pogue had the proof quarters! There were many favorites but my personal favorites are the 1796 quarter, 1822 25/50 in proof and the 1820 proof. Each one of those are a joy to see. All bust quarter folks must take a look at these as we may never see these coins again.

Can't wait to see these coins in hand during lot viewing... could live without the special labels though, the name on the label as pedigree like most other collections would have been just fine.
