Holy cow, the Coin Market Must be Soft! I Won a Lot on Heritage!

Walkerguy21DWalkerguy21D Posts: 11,257 ✭✭✭✭✭
Been quite a while.....I don't put in lowball or nuclear bids.....just ones I think are reasonable.
Based on historical prices brought for nice PCGS AU58 coins, I think I did Ok - and this one has a well above average strike also; it will make a nice upgrade to my set.
What I don't know is how to convert the URL's from Heritage into images I can post here image

Some lots go completely unnoticed, I won a coin for 260 I would not be able to buy anywhere for sub $500, while a coin that you can buy any day for $1,110 sold for $2,115 and there was nothing special about it.

I think the HA phenomenon has become a bit like a casino, you get in a bidding war with someone and you start to think the item is worth more so you bid more...but it's not. On the other hand, you win something for 50% of your bid and you think the market is soft...

I'm at exactly this place...so I'm learning how to adjust my emotions and expectations...

    Nice win.

I went light on my bids reflecting market softness. Ended up with one nice Early dollar.

I was 1 for 10. The lot I won was won for 60% of my max. bid though.
    Sometimes things just go unnoticed.

I believe the market for coins with great eye appeal is very strong. I viewed many of the coins in the Heritage internet only auction and earmarked over 50 coins of interest. Many of these were eliminated immediately due to the presence of bids that were over greysheet. During the auction many of the remaining coins sold for sums significantly over greysheet, and there was strong bidding on most of the coins I highlighted. So, in my opinion, there were no "bargains" if you sought coins with nice eye appeal.

I think things do go unnoticed or unloved..I won a lot in Session 9, but I also got blown out on some...it all depends.

I don't see how coins can get lost in a 10,000 lot sale...do you? image

I bid on one coin in my series and watched it go to 3x my max bid. Whoops. Sometimes I think I know nothing about coins.

    1818 Quarter

    Nice. Clean, clean fields.

My theory is that some of the lower-value coins can be picked off at Heritage because a lot of whales are going after the high-dollar stuff. I might be totally wrong, of course.
Let's try not to get upset.

Nice half! I went 1 for 2. Got the Hawaiian half I posted earlier, got outbid during the online live auction while away on the other.

Looks like one of those AU-64's. Very nice!!!!

LOL at this thread title...I said the same thing when I won two auctions in this last Heritage auction. I haven't won anything there in about 3 years!

I went 1 for 4. Won one for 80% of my bid, tied one & lost, lost one by a little, and lost one by a bunch. The last two which I thought I bid really strong money for, way over PCGS price guide. The last two looked to be really nice coins, but you have to draw the line somewhere. At least I didn't get skunked!

The Bust Series coins seemed to go for well over PCGS suggested retail. Many CAC PCGS Busties were at moon money. Take a look at the Sheridan Downey auction prices realized, and you will see what I mean. Of course, Sheridan only seems to get the cream of the crop Bust Half Dollars.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I bid on one coin and the bid I thought could not lose was outbid with a day to go.

1861-S $2.50 in VG10 is valued at $370 in the PCGS price guide. In July 2013 this coin sold for $705. Now 18 months later the same coin sold for $1,880 - this time with a green sticker.

The coin market does seem to be soft. I bought this 1855-P gold dollar in MS-63 for well under Gray Sheet bid at the FUN show.

Still my batting average at Heritage for old British gold (18th and 19th centuries) has been very poor. The coins have brought more than the estimates and even more that the "high bids" that the guys at Heritage advised me to consider.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Same here. Apparently, the coins I want are the same coins lots of others willing to keep bidding over and over again.

    Nice snag, Walkerguy!

I was tracking this Arrows & Rays Quarter but couldn't make a bid with other financial priorities. It would have gone nicely with my A&R Half.

That was a gorgeous A&R quarter, Catbert.

I picked up an AU55 53-O Half on the bourse which is nice, but not as stunning as that quarter.

In regards to scubafuel 1818 quarter, I was surprised by the winning amount also, a little less than 3 times what I thought, B-9 LDS is tough, that value?
More proof of bifurcated market (society?), for those that have the means to pursue the chase seems to be on for what is really scarce,
and thousands of dollars would be small price to fill a want if one had tens of millions or more. Those of more limited means (myself included)
would not stretch and be surprised.
