Has the silver eagle spotting mystery been solved?

Just listed a spotted MS70 coin (noted as such). Wondering if the cause has been determined. Seems like the brain trust has been wrestling with the issue for a generation.

If they have they haven't told use, just quit insuring.

Many attempts....lots of threads.....no firm resolution - problem continues. Best option, acetone rinse upon receipt of coin..... personal experience shows that works....might just be luck though since I did not have a control group. Cheers, RickO

Other have suggested this, too. I think I remember from way back when they think the rinse of the planchets at the mint was where the issue starts.

I know the milkspotting problem seems to be widespread, but is it a storage issue? Does everyone see this problem?

I took my 2015 proof ASE's to co-habitat with their brothers and sisters, and spot checked (<---pun, haha) about 2-3 dozen proof and uncirc ASE's from 1986 to present, and *none* had any spotting. Checked about a dozen silver proof sets from 1999 to present, same thing. There's some hazing on the silver proof commems in a couple of prestige sets, but those weren't purchased new, and have no idea how they were stored previous to my ownership. (A couple has mildew problems when I bought 'em.) I didn't check any ASE bullion.

It seems odd that for all the complaints I've read over the years, that not a single coin I have (that I know of) exhibits the problem.

Am I alone in this? Do I have some magical anti-milk-spotting powers? image
