My first thought was 45. I still think that. Like it a lot. Very nice and meaty classic coin!

The 1814/3 die marriage rapidly deteriorated, producing various die states. Two are fundamental: O.101 without die cracks and O.101a, with. The former is an R6 which testifies to the rapid decline of the dies. The die clashing contributed to their failure, likely.

Besides the obvious overdate there are other notable traits. Two dentils north of the second T in STATES, e.g., are oversized and the left one is attached to the T with a die defect.

    Cool coin, Brian.

Seems to me it has borderline AU details. The folds in the cap and drapery are pretty strong, curls have decent detail. Eagles neck feathers are good. Check out the talons. The left wing is always weak on these, as is the clasp.

AU50 wouldn't surprise me. But luster looks muted so I'll go with 45.

I think it goes XF 40. The rim bump and those marks thru 50 C. might hold it back though.

The rim bump is probably edge lettering, as made. Very common. The marks at 50C are clashing, also mint-made.

    I think she'll grade 45. A little too nice for a 40, a little lacking for a 50.
    I brake for ear bars.

The clashes weakened the details, so, depending on luster, I wouldn't be surprised by a 50

40 seems to be the most probable grade. I would grade it 45

No matter the grade, she is a beaut! The grade of course will depend on two factors, caliber of graders and the luster remaining. Unless the graders are sensitive to the variety, they might misconstrue strike for wear. If the luster crosses the fields and not just nestled betwixt the perimeter devises, she deserves an AU nod.

That said, she looks like a yummy 45. I hope I'm wrong and that you report she has AU luster and that she receives a commensurate grade.

EF-40, maybe EF-45 if there is enough luster in the protected areas. There is too much obvious wear to call this AU-50.

Not much luster on the coin - just a lot of crust, which I personally prefer. image

    My prediction is XF45.

It's been awhile since I made an accurate prediction, but out of all of the "Grade It" threads I've posted, this was one guess I was very confident with. I like it right at 45 - no higher, no lower. There's not enough luster for AU50 but too much detail for XF40.

    Thanks for playing!

If the one posted by JRocco is 45....this one should be at least 50 based on the detail difference alone.....maybe 53.

I decided not to post the TrueView image because I feel it does not depict the coin as it looks it hand; those pics almost make it look gold-plated. I feel like the coin was photographed at a steep angle with the light source half an inch from its surfaces. Not to mention the WB appears to be way on the 'red' side. I'm in no position to critique professional photographers, but it seems like most of the coins I've had TV'd lately show harsh over-exposure to light.

Trueview should try and capture what the coin looks like in hand, only with magnification of the details. Isn't that the essence of "true." It's a shame that Trueview didn't capture the ear bars. I'd prefer to see more details rather than an emphasis on toning which may or may not be true to the coin.
    I brake for ear bars.
