ANA Spring Show - Portland
I was looking at the ANA website about the Spring ANA show in Portland.
On their website they have links for (and I quote):
"Available transportation for Portland National Money Show" - good idea
"Attractions near the Portland Convention Center" - I always want to know what is around town to check out!
"Restaurants near the Portland Convention Center" - I never want to eat at a chain restaurant.
"Hospitals near the Portland Convention Center" - Hospitals??? Are they trying to tell us something?

Ride the Max, Lot's of hiking in Forest Park, Multnomah Falls, Bigfoot hunting, Trail Blazer basketball at the Moda Center, Higgins restaurant downtown, many brew pubs and wine tasting bars, there are likely to be stampedes at the opening given the Oregon collector base so know the local hospitals.

<< <i>Ever watched the documentaries about the gangs in Portland?? You might need a hospital!
Really, I thought the drug kids all ran away to Portland because it is 10000x safer than LA or San Francisco.
On a serious note, I have know quit a few people that have become serious ill or even died on a road trip,
so this info is good idea.

Figuring the Goose attained an altitude of approximately 12' on its maiden (and only) flight, it may have just cleared your height had you been standing (or treading water actually) under it. Hughes and his accomplishments (and the later Glomar Explorer designed specifically to retrieve a Russian sub -- (see "Subs, Secrets, and Spies" -- NOVA) are certainly an interesting part of our history as a country.
I love your avatar. 7-8 still flying???

When my first wife and I flew to Seattle for the ANA in 1990(?), when we got there she discovered that she had her insulin but had forgotten her syringes. A quick cab ride to the closest emergency room got her a one-week prescription.
Let us not forget John Burns, who passed away at a coin show.
<< <i>If the Spruce Goose wasn't nearby, I probably would not be going to the show. I've always wanted to see that airplane, so I'm going. >>
I hope you get to see the Spruce Goose Tootawl. It is an amazing monument to a legendary monumental ego.
I got to spend a Night at the Museum with a Scout troop and we camped out right under her.
You can see our bedrolls in this pic I took.
While you're there find out what the plane is made of. Hint - it's not spruce.

I hope to see a bunch of you all there.
<< <i>Always remember, when referring generically to "Portland", that there are two Portlands, the original, in Maine, and the 'other', established much later, in Oregon. In fact, Portland, Oregon was named after Portland, Maine in a lost coin toss. Otherwise, Portland, OR would be named Boston, OR today. >>
Cool and on topic!
Turns out that the Portland Penny was an 1835 Large Cent which is on display at the Oregon Historical Society.

Maybe they are expecting a new Mint product that the masses will injure themselves trying to be the first in line.....

Could the ANA put the show in a town with a recognizable name that was any harder to get to?
<< <i>While I live in the south, I attended the last two spring shows in Atlanta and New Orleans. I understand moving the show around the country, but Portand? I least the southern towns are major cities.

The PNW has quite an active coin collector and show community. Even a 30 table show in Clackamas OR (southern edge of Portland) had customers and dealers from as far away as 250 miles. But it's also an almost insular community - the last PNNA show (also in Portland) - over 100 tables - had only two or three from outside the area (and THEY were Californians like Charmy).
So bringing ANA to PNW is a big deal. But your choices are limited... WA, OR, ID, Southern BC, Western MT and WY and maybe FarNorCal - just don't offer a lot of cities to host such a large con. After Seattle (4m metro area), Vancouver BC (2.4m) & Portland (2.2m) and then... well the next largest areas are Spokane (471K metro area) & Boise (616K)

Wanna share a room? My rules, your points...
The hotels in Vancouver, WA and by the airport, which is accessible by light rail, seem much cheaper.

Compared to other cities the ANA Money Show has been held at in the past, Portland is not a bad choice and it's a commuter friendly city that isn't that difficult to reach by mainline air service.
The Pacific Northwest is not within the normal large coin show travel circuit although there are a few medium sized shows throughout the year. Perhaps it is because the area is off the annual coin show tour, those medium sized shows are normally well attended.

The convention center area itself has more problems than any of the other places I mentioned.
The problem is it doesn't take much to make the typical coin person get all paranoid and worked up over virtually nothing.

<< <i>Seattle is clearly a better venue. >>
Here here!
Well, would suggest a little on the eastside....maybe Renton/South Center. I wouldn't do it downtown Seattle or even at SeaTac.
Plenty of hotels in South Center
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Ditto that! The Doubletree was a bit aged last time we were there too, so it doesn't seem very convention-friendly...in addition that it's not really convenient to the convention center except for the light rail...and that's not something you want to do with coins.
Portland is a neat city though, so I'm looking forward to our visit...

<< <i>Weather forecast for Portland during the entire coin show is NO RAIN, and around 60 degrees sunny. >>
Sounds good. My forecast on Tuesday is snow and cold. Should be below 0 when I hit the road for Oregon on Wednesday morning.
Of course, I will get to listen to some spring training MLB games on the way, so that should warm things up.

Hi Drunner,
Yes, the P-38 known as the Glacier Girl is still flying! I was lucky enough to see her fly for the first time after getting rescued from Greenland and a 10 year rebuild. I plan on seeing the Hercules on Wednesday.
While happy to hear about the ANA coming to Portland since I live in the area, I'm disappointed about the lack of media coverage about the event. Have seen nothing on the local TV, radio or newspaper. There wasn't even any notice at a local B&M I visited Friday.
While I'm not a very active collector these days I do enjoy the show when it's in the area. I guess if it hadn't been for this site I wouldn't even have known the show was coming to town.

This post is in the other thread. I commented on that one that Sacramento also lacked advertising.
