Why do you "watch" an eBay auction?

I totally understand watching a high dollar or unique item, but my question relates more to:
An item that may go for $5 tops, starting at .99 and does not have a bid yet. Trying to snipe a $5 item? Really? If that's the case, get a life and ust bid the .99 starting bid.
Never understood watching very low value items...thinking of changing my eBay name to "ihatewatchersjustbid"

<< <i>Why would you possibly care if I or anyone else "watches" a low price item. My advice to you is in YOUR post, "get a life". >>
Here is a classic case of 1st world problems. Honestly, OP needs to relax on this. It's not someone staring through their home windows into their personal life. Possibly the 'Watcher' is thinking for a couple of days if they really want their hastle of buying a $5 auction. Then end up deciding they don't, so no bid gets placed.
After I have purchased one of them or more I will unwatch the rest. Watching becomes a placeholder.
<< <i>For me personally; let's say that I want a common widget for whatever reason. I will watch several of the same thing and then compare. After I have purchased one of them or more I will unwatch the rest. Watching becomes a placeholder. >>

Edit: didn't notice the price earlier as I'd just woke up. In that case, it's just the thrill of sniping. Being so cheap, I'm sure there can be many more to bid on.

Why pay $5 when I can get it for $4.

interested in anything in the .99 - $5 range.
Rarely would I even consider bidding on anything at all on ebay. Too many ripoffs sell on ebay.
I'm planning on bidding later.
The current price is ridiculously low and I don't really want the item but I can't help not bidding later if the price stays where it's at.
The current price is ridiculously high and now I'm curious to see how much higher it goes.
The item is an interesting variety not described in the listing, and I'm curious to see if anyone else will notice.
I forget if I need an example and I don't want to interrupt what I'm doing to check right this second.
The pictures are hard to make out and I want to go back and think about it again later.
I have a feeling it might be worth significantly more than the current bid, and I need to do some research to figure out its true value.
I'm not sure if I want it at the current price and need to give myself some more time to decide.
I have one that I'm planning on selling and I want to see what this one sells for first.
The current buy-it-now price is too high, but maybe the seller will reduce the price eventually.
The current buy-it-now price is too high, and I want to see if anyone is silly enough to buy it anyway.
I saw the current seller snipe that piece a few weeks ago, and now that they've relisted it I want to see how much of a score they got.
There are two people who always drive the price up super high on these pieces; I wonder if maybe they'll miss this one.
I know someone who wants this but I'll give him a few days to let him have the thrill of finding it on his own before I point it out to him.
...and I've surely had other reasons also, from time to time. I estimate that I place bids on maybe 10% of the items that I put on my watch list. The rest are just spectating.

Yes to all of the above and I will add that I watch many, many auctions for coins related to my specialty to help me keep in touch with the movement of the market. If I see a spike in the PR for common coins I might throw a few up for sale, and if I see a lot of better material languishing without bids I may jump in and try to find some bargains.

well, off to get a life, once I'm done clicking 'watch' on all of the OP's auctions

Some people watch because they have the same type of coin and want to see what they really sell for
That's what completed listings are for I thought. If you want to know what something sells for, check what has already sold.
And those telling me to get a life shouldn't take things so personally, I don't recall saying any names, it was a comment in general, but since they insist on bashing me when they don't even know me I'd like to point out that you just wasted some of your life reading a thread that obviously you can't comment on in a civil manner. With that said, who's the arse face. Must really suck to be you to feel you need to bash someone on the internet LMAO.
But I'll also add that I almost never bid early in an auction (I guess that is the same as "I'm planning to bid later"), but if I am looking at buying a simple widget I use a "Bid Group" in Esnipe to try to snipe one real cheap. Once I have bought one cheap, I unwatch the rest. If I don't get one cheap, I simply wait for the next round of widgets and try again.

Honestly not being a smart arse, but have you ever heard of completed listings? It will save you all the time you spend watching and you can go right to what it is actually selling for.
Honestly, OP needs to relax on this
Relax? Who's worked up. Some here act as if I was speaking to them personally lol. The inital post was just a general comment. Maybe they are watchers so they feel like I am speaking to them directly?
Does anyone else see the irony here? I am not worked up over this, that would be you all ASSuming that I am worked up over this. It appears to me that YOU ALL are the ones getting worked up LMAO!
No one yanks a chain around here quite like POM
Man, that aint even fair. I see far more extreme trolling going on here than I would ever attempt to initiate. All I did is put a question to the board of why they watch auctions, and state that I don't get it. wtf...I can't state my opinion?
Some have responded in a civil manner and that is appreciated because they obviously see that it was just a question, nothing more or less.
Ah - now I get it - we aren't actually watching live the entire time.
If I find an item of interest, why would I want to look for it again later?? Much simpler to have in the watch file.
<< <i>Your avatar looks scary.....like you are watching me! >>
You "really" questioned our bidding strategy, told us to get a life, and then told us to "just bid", and finished off by telling us that you hate us.

Whatever. watch away, just seems like a complete waste of time to me. If you want to know what an item is selling for, use completed listings...eBay 101.

Actually, I was thinking that was sort of a good thing...chain yanking threads are helpful occasionally.
I like to know who's who around here...
Since the price only matters when the auction ends, watchers can turn into bidders as the ending time draws closer - or if the price is more than they are willing to pay - they don't bid.
I've had auctions end with 10+ watching with no-one bidding.
<< <i>and again. I only clicked one time and it posted it 4 times LOL >>
I hate it when people post like 4 consecutive posts in the same thread and then blame the computer.

It's become interesting to see how minds can spin a tale to which they have no clue what a simple comment was about. Play on. I'm done.
Thanks to those who simply answered the question posed and didn't feel they needed to pile on to what has become a comedy of assinine comments.
