Eat enough of the zinc away and it begins to float - weight 0.26 grams (about 0.20 zinc weight)

one end was floating today.

Can the whole thing float? Yes:

black specs are the post-reaction zinc after I cleaned it out to weigh it.

    it's life changing

luckily the mint is steering away from the plated options in their 2014 biannual report to congress.

Try making a small hole in the copper plating and then soaking the coin in muriatic acid. This will preferentially eat the zinc core and leave the copper plating shell.

This is a regular cent with no attempt to put a hole in it

    It's been soaking in vinegar.

I figure one or two more soaks and the zinc is gone.

The copper alone should be about 0.06g
