Just a hypothetical situation to post...

tahoe98tahoe98 Posts: 11,388 ✭✭✭

...If a collector wanted to take a coin to a PCGS authorized dealer to have submitted but was nervous about having the coin switched, and decided beforehand, to photo the coin to try and prove the coin returned was indeed the coin submitted, and not say a word unless the coin returned was suspect?

As said just hypothetical and wondered if this has ever been tried and what are your thoughts? image

I have heard of this happening with a dealer local to me.
The collector involved had no photo of the original coin and was never able to prove the misdeed.

A dealer friend of mine submitted a 1955 nickel for a customer. The customer thought the coin was a high grade uncirculated coin, but it was really just a proof and the dealer told the customer that. The coin was submitted anyway and came back proof. The customer then accused the dealer of switching the coin before submitting it.

    1) I wouldn't do business with someone I couldn't trust. Just get a membership and submit directly in the case of such concern.
    2) It can't hurt to do it, after all it's just a photo

    A few thoughts.....

I won't say that coins are never switched, but believe it is very rare.

If you are taking pictures, include the submittor's name and the current date, such as on a newspaper, in the picture.

If you don't show the pictures at the time of submission, or at the time of pickup after slabbing, but take them home and later claim that a switch was made, how does the dealer know that you did not switch pictures with those of a nicer coin?

A B&M near me takes a photo of said coin and also writes down all identifying marks/characteristics in detail and takes the submitting fee & a small handling fee
hands photo & details of the coin to customer and sends to TPG.

When the coin returns calls customer to come pick up his/her freshly TPG graded coin.

    I don't actually see a question.

I see a question mark at the end of a run on sentence.

There is no such things as a hypothetical question (within reason, of course). If you can imagine it, it has happened.

    This.

Or, submit directly to PCGS at a show ...

Or, piggyback on a trusted friend's submission.

Several solutions, all workable if one doesn't want to use an authorized dealer.

That's the way to do it, protecting himself and the customer.

This is a fair question, coming from someone with more than 11,500 posts here.

    Here are my two thoughts...

    1. I see nothing wrong with your idea. For that matter, why not take the pics in front of the dealer?

    2. This is the very reason I only accept raw submissions from customers and friends I have worked with extensively. If the PCGS grader is kind enough to wipe a piece of dust off a coin, I might be accused of switching out a coin on a collector. I'd rather make my $5 another way.

As always, just my two cents.

Like one said, get a membership and deal direct. I have sent lots of coins to PCGS and have full trust in them. Memberships aren't that expensive.

I think it really comes down to getting it done yourself.

I've had ONE coin I needed to really get certified for grade and (apologies to the forum), just got a cheap ANACS membership and did it there.

If you have a concern, you should get it done yourself one way or another.

Get a membership. I don't trust anyone else with my coins except the TPG.

    Agree.

What's another $69 after all the other fees associated with getting a coin graded anyway? Shipping, handling, Insurance, packaging.

Especially if its a valuable coin.

I take pic of most of my coins when I send them in you never know what can and will happen so if I gave a dealer a coin to submit yes I will take a pic it's good for both. I sent in some red copper and when graded it was RB I looked at the pic and it was the same coin just looked more brown after grading. So yes do take pic so you dont say it's not your coin and it is.
