strange grading situation

Hey everyone
Let me start by wishing everyone a merry christmas and happy new year .
Recently I purchased an old half dollar in a pcgs genuine unc details holder , a beautiful specimen with tons of meat on the bone and a great look to the coin. I could not locate the cleaning notated on the holder so i decided to roll the dice crack it out and resubmit it. Keep it mind the coin is worth 4 figures in the details holder. I just got my grades back and it got a straight grade! Unfortunately it went from unc details all the way down to xf45 - is this a common occurance ? If this happened to you would you send it in for reconsideration because of the disparity in the two grades? I believe this coin belongs in an au58 holder - i do not have photos because i have not received the coin back yet in the mail. This forum has taught me alot and i was just hoping to hear what the valuable opinions of this board thought
Thanks for the help

<< <i>This happens more often than most collectors realize. Sounds like your coin was silently net graded the second time around. >>
That's a big net grade.

I've used all three services, reconsideration a few for green holders and regrade only once on an early half cent where I thought the technical grade was low, but was cautious about the color designation and didn't want to lose it. The majority of the time, I crack and submit raw.
Hoard the keys.

Is the coin still a four-figure coin in an XF45 straight grade holder? Is it worth more than the details graded UNC or in the XF45 holder?
<< <i>I think it will be easier for my family to liquidate my collection graded, ive had numerous disagreements with dealers over a raw coins grade, i think the plastic eliminates most of those fights not all but most >>
This is not the kind of coin you want family members to have to liquidate. It obviously has something wrong with it that causes wild swings in grading opinions.
Don't waste any more money on it. Sell it now that you have it in a graded holder and don't look back.
This situation is a good example of why problem coins should be avoided, especially expensive problem coins.

I agree with 291fifth. Fights about grade are really about price. Does a slab add value to a 'problem' coin? Of course--it is a guarantee that the coin is genuine. Does the slab eliminate fights about price? Absolutely not---dealers in particular are not thrilled about the prospect of buying other people's problem coins because they are difficult to sell. Without seeing an image, much less the coin in hand, it is impossible to say whether the piece in a 45 slab has about the same value as in an UNC Details slab.

<< <i>Believe it or not its worth more in the details holder last couple sold around 4k in unc details holder while xf45 coins bring 2kish >>
Interesting...I do not think I would have seen that coming

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

So, apart from the grading fees, what do you have to lose by cracking it out & trying again?

That is one heck of a drop. There has to be more to the story. My dog can tell the difference between UNC and XF!

Send it back if you feel the coin is now effectively under-priced.
And as far as collectors all dumping their key date coins because they have "problems" that wouldn't allow a straight grade? If that's the case then half or more of all 1870-cc quarters and 1874-cc dimes in existence should be immediately sold as unworthy at any price.
