Double Struck Bust Half with pics

I recently had this coin slabbed by PCGS and I brought it as a show-and-tell to the local coin club meeting and it drew a lot of attention so I thought I would share it with the members of the forum. Enjoy the pictures. I am new to the forum so I hope someone will be kind enough to open and display the 8 pictures properly for all to see. Harvey

Give me that coin, a good loupe and a glass of cognac and I am good for a long time.
I'll have the cigar after I put the coin down.

    Great coin.

Coins from that era are very interesting as the production process was fairly loose and the equipment was much more crude at that time. Made for lots of interesting coins.... see Overton numbers...LOL

    << <i>So...exactly how does this happen? >>

Coin is struck ... coin fails to eject from the coining chamber ... coin falls back into place, rotating slightly ... coin is struck again ... coin ejects

A modern version is a double struck, in collar. Since this coin was not struck in a collar, it's just a double struck.

Neat coin. Nice find for $50 ... even way back then.

Very cool coin. I bought one about 5 years ago off E-bay just because I needed an 1822 for a date set I had just started and did not know it was double struck until it arrived. (The seller did not know it either) I later sold it to one of the Bust nuts that frequent these forums for a nice profit. Looking back I wish I had kept it. I have somehow lost or deleted the pic of the reverse, but it was less dramatic than the OP's coin. I remember that the arrow heads were dramatically doubled. The main features on the obverse is Liberty and the stars.

I'll be taking it out to the local coin show in Plantation Florida this coming Sunday to show
a few of the dealers. I have 2 other error pieces that are also slabbed by PCGS. One is a
clipped planchet ( with a letter in the "valley" of the clip) PCGS wouldn't write it on the holder.
The third piece is an offcenter BH. Its a neat set of 3 error BH's
