Lucky find at local pawn shop today

USMarine6USMarine6 Posts: 1,951 ✭✭✭✭✭
So I was out and about today and decided to stop at a few local shops that I go into every so often. One shop that Ive only been in a few times had 15 Morgans in a box. I asked to see them and as I was looking at the dates my heart skipped a beat when I looked at this one. Asked how much these were and the clerk replied 24 each. Before I could respond the clerk says to me if I take them all he would do 23 each. Of coarse I said Ill take em!!

What state do you live? I live in Houston and have frequented the pawn shops for years searching for deals. Every Morgan dollar I have found in a pawn shop has been a common date, harshly cleaned, and priced at $60+. They typically even put the price sticker directly on the coin, leaving a sticky residue once removed.

I didn't even address the fact you found a key date! Lucky you!!

I live up north and have been known to find rare dates and MM's in pawn shop junk silver bins myself. I have found '09-O quarters and halves in them for melt.

Sweet deal...where I'm from, as far as I know, Pawn shops are not allowed to deal with coins. They can pawn/sell gold coins in jewelry but not individual coins that are certified or raw.

So what ya think, at least worth 10X+ of purchase price?

And what about how it got there. They also lacked the simple knowledge of looking up a value of a coin? Did it likely come from some gramps collection that was handed down and he didn't leave any instructions or notes of the coin's value? It's very likely, moreso, that it came from a stolen collection.

Not sure about 10x but its certainly worth $175 to $200 if I want to sell it quickly. Thanks all for the comments.

I wouldn't put it past them to check a few dates, see they're very worn and common, then toss a price on the lot.

Why does everything found have to be stolen? Last few "find" threads I've seen it's been that way...

I don't enjoy being a Donny Downer, but have you placed the coin on a hard,
flat surface to insure that the coin isn't bent ? I'm astounded that no one has posed the question before this. image

The 95-O is not bent. Why would you suggest such a thing? If it were a draped bust (thin) half, perhaps, but any bend in a Morgan dollar would impart other problems that are blatantly obvious. The OP's coin is a nice, wholesome 95-O. A lot of pawn shop and "we buy gold" places do not even look at the dates or mintmarks.

Lady Luck smiled on you that day!

I once bought a bag of Morgan dollars strictly by number.

As it ended up, there was an 1893-S inside. It is now in a holder.
