Hattrick. This is by no means intended to "brag", but I probably have one of the more extensive inventories of modern US coins out there. Because I believe in the future of modern coins, I have held many, many modern coins 5 years, ten years, twenty years, and honestly as far back as since 1983 to be precise. I have made many mistakes along the way and I can point to many coins I should have never held for years, if not decades. On the other hand, I can point to many coins I was very lucky to hold throughout the years. With each passing year, I fine tune what I want to hold on to. I never expect to "get them all right", but my batting average is pretty decent these days. I try to make it a point to not "recommend" any coins on any message boards (especially when my time horizons are often years, if not a decade). So, you will not get much "hype" here. When I see (what I consider) misguided posts (and I am not referring to your posts here), I do take the time to respond to them.

Certainly some Moderns will ripen like fine wine. I sure as heck wish I had decided to HOLD the 91-D and 93-D Kennedys I made in PCGS MS68 back in the 90's. I thought I was doing well when I sold them for $300 each! image

The 50th Ann. Silver Kennedy coins are super nice and quite scarce mintage graded or not. They are up there with the better varieties in the entire series and at $25 each raw a nice long term buy for sure.

As you can see, the mint is starting to fine tune their products and give us the variety most people want. Expect enhanced finish and reverse proof coins for the entire US series. These will be very hot items if and when they are produced. They now work in cahoots with the grading companies to match the timing of the releases and are marketing monsters. The grading companies will continue to grow and be too busy all of the time. I honestly think you will see insane output from the mint in the next few years.

One more thing....I remember the old time dealers back in 1999-2000 that could not hang with the change in the market. They did not like the grading of coins that were not classic coins and were averse to state quarters and all of the new varieties. Now many of them have caught on and are along for the ride I have noticed. I would keep your mind open to the most modern coins as they will be the classics of the future.

Two things we should know for sure:

Things are not always as simple as 1 and 2. Sometimes there are surprises, ala the 2008/2007 reverse ASE's...Early on I'd sold over 20 of those in and around $400 and shortly thereafter, well they went up. Most here already know the trends in modern coinage and it's not a surprise to predict the future. However, it is equally unrealistic to think all one need do is buy and item, hyped or not and then just steadily watch it go up from there.

    Wondercoin,

We are commenting from two different perspectives. You as a dealer/flipper and me as a collector. AS you said you buy many if not most issues in quantities
to sell at one time or another. The odds of getting money makers over the years are much better and will help override the ones that do not do as well. You also
stated there were ones you wish you never purchased. While you are making money selling for over the price you paid, how many are you buying at that same price?
Even though you are making money now, how many of your customers will be able to get the same or more if or when they might decide to sale? The reason so many
collectors are getting into flipping is they need the income from the few good ones to cover the cost of the many they will never recover their cost on.

Hattrick: It is understandable that you made the assumptions that you did about what I do. But, just to clarify... I have seriously COLLECTED modern coins (especially business strikes) for the past (31) years. If I was a dealer/flipper holding modern coins for 10-30 years, I would have been out of business a long time ago! I buy perhaps only 2%-5% of the US Mint offerings and spend many days on the hunt for high grade moderns the "old fashioned way". For example, this past week, Justin and I personally screened the better part of 10,000 coins from mint sets dated 1975-1981 on the hunt for a few specific coins I need for a couple of my registry sets. In addition, I helped Justin review the better part of (1,000) 1971-1972 proof sets in the past month on the hunt for a couple 1971-S Lincoln Cents in PR69DCAM grade. The first one I ever make I plan on keeping (30 years on the hunt thus far and no cigar as of yet), but I also know a couple collectors who would like one as well. Maybe I can produce (3) coins (in my dreams) and make everyone happy!

The project for tomorrow ... a buddy of mine bought a small cache of fresh bank wrapped 1954-S nickels rolls at a local show in Texas. Even though I handled the neat PCGS-MS67FS coin on two different occasions,I would sure love to slab a gem FS from a sealed roll!

    Wondercoin,

First I just want to say in my last post what I was saying is that serious collectors, unless they are very wealthy, end up becoming dealers or flippers to finance their passion for collecting.
I know that you are a well respected major player in the Modern coin market and I admire you for that. I wish you only the best of luck and many fun times and good finds. I might
have overstated some of some of my comments to play this guy's advocate.image

My current interest in collecting is shiny silver coins with designs that appeal to my eyes. As you must know many of recent years silver commemoratives are not worth what they cost.
To me that is not important because I bought what I like to keep and enjoy, however it is sometimes disappointing having to pay a premium that is too excessive based on what the future
value of the coin will be. As many have said always a gamble so buy what you like.

    Kennedy S Enhanced Population 12/2

    image

Total Enhanced graded rose 206 to 1312 from 1106

    FS 70 +71 to 576 (43.9%), FS 69 +5 to 116 (8.8%)
    FS 70 PL +108 to 513 (39.1%), FS 69 PL +15 to 84 (15%)
    FS 70 DM no change @ 8 (0.6%), FS 69 DM +1 to 7 (0.5%), FS 68 DM new of 1 (0.07%)

DM remains the rarest of the Enhanced coins graded well under 1% of the total graded. And a 68 DM appeared. Also a few non FS were slabbed within the FS eligible period. Plain FS and FS PL percentages of the total graded remained about the same.

  • GoldminersGoldminers Posts: 4,409 ✭✭✭✭✭
Very few Kennedy S mints seem to have the strike quality to qualify for DMPL. I have one and it is a beautiful coin and similar to the proof but with an uncirculated cameo look and mirror background that is really nice to see in person. I have every version in the highest grades so far and have looked at them all in detail. I think Wondercoin is on the right track and these S mint DMPL will be fairly rare populations especially in first strike.

Of course many people hate moderns in general, and so I expect some here to consider them a waste of time. I personally like the moderns and to have a MS70 DMPL Kennedy as part of a #1 modern commemorative half dollar set is worth a bit extra to me. I still think the DMPL's should have a higher coin rating than the PL or regular versions for a given grade.
  • wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 17,126 ✭✭✭✭✭
Goldminers. I agree that the DMPL coins will be quite special. The only question is where they might "settle in" for their price point. The "First strike" period for these coins is now over (other than sealed boxes floating around that were mailed out last week or earlier by the US Mint or currently at PCGS). It should be interesting to see just how few (or many) DMPL's were actually graded by PCGS as FS coins. But, of course, the non-FS coins should be very popular with collectors as well.

IF YOU BUY WHAT YOU LIKE, AT A PRICE YOU CAN AFFORD AT THE TIME, THEN THINGS WILL BE EASIER

IF YOU BUY WHAT OTHER PEOPLE LIKE, BORROW TO FUND IT AND EXPECT MULTIPLES OF RETURN, THEN YOU ARE LIKELY TO BE UNHAPPY

BONGO SAY NEARLY EVERYTHING DEPRECIATES OVER TIME.BONGO WOULD NOT PAY $500 FOR A SILVER BELL THIS XMAS AND EXPECT IT TO BE WORTH $550 NEXT YEAR. BUT BONGO KNOW A SILVER BELL IS NOT OLD COIN.

    OR IS IT.

BONGO MAYBE NOT SURPRISED THAT OLD COIN IS LIKE ANY OTHER LIMITED NON ESSENTIAL COMMODITY AND SUBJECT TO THE WHIMS OF TASTE AND MARKET.

PUT THE COIN IN BOOK AND ENJOY IT.

IF IT IS WORTH MORE WHEN YOU COME TO SELL IT, WELL DONE

IF NOT, THEN YOU HAVE HAD ENJOYMENT OUT OF IT.

REMEMBER THAT OLD COIN IS ONLY WORTH FEW DOLLARS IN PHYSICAL MATERIAL VALUE - THIS IS WHY VALUE IS AN ESOTERIC CONCEPT IN MANY WAYS AND IT MAY BE VULGAR TO ASSIGN ANY MONETARY VALUE TO OLD COIN

I know that of the first 8 population, most of them have sold for $2,000+. No way to know where they go from there, but for example the Congress MS70 half dollar with a population of 14 has a price guide value of $4,150.

Time will tell, but if these are eventually included in Kennedy sets instead of just commemoratives, the demand will be higher. Also, I again state that PCGS should put higher ratings on DMPL 70's than on regular 70's to show which sets are really #1 and not base #1 status on who got there first with a lower graded "variety" coin.

It is soooo early in the game, I would expect that $2,000 price tag to slip. Considerably.

    Wondercoins,

Couple sales were dealer direct, and a couple on eBay. So "most" is my assumption, half is more definitive. However, I suspect some were kept and not sold, so most of the 8 graded that were sold, may still be a valid statement. No way to know for sure. Have not seen any of the MS69's for sale... so not easy to know prices yet for them.image

By the way, the Wondercoin team finally got on the scoreboard. About 150 sets into it, I just got a grading report that I scored a single 70DMPL! So, pop should be at least nine coins tomorrow or the next day. I will keep the coin in anticipation that these coins will, one day, be properly added to the Kennedy sets for which I personally have a top 5 set. Wondercoin.

PCGS populations for modern coins, especially first strike, are not accurate or final. They can change anytime, sometimes drastically,

from sealed, stored or whatever stashes people have and decide to pay them for a slab at any time.

    Mitch,

Glad you finally got one for your set! They are very tough so far. It is not easy to get an uncirculated planchet to flow evenly with a single strike into an even proof-like finish all the way around on both sides. One of 150 or more graded is a challenge for sure.

Of the SP Kennedy finishes with 4,599 graded none have come back SP70. Even the SP69 D's are running about 1 out of 50 coins graded and are also fairly tough so far.

    Cheers

Those 70 DM's are really taking off huh. LOL

1587 Enhanced Total, DM 70's 0.88%, DM 69's 0.5%, and still only 1 DM 68 0.06%, which is still up on ebay for BIN big money billed as population 1 (link in an above post)
