What's the back story on the NGC Black Holders?

  assuming you mean the retro holder and not the original it was an option for a brief time with limited candidates such as ASE's. btw, "we're" is a contraction of "we are" so I suppose you meant "were" instead.

  If I remember correctly they started as a retro holder with either the SF or WP ASE sets.....now you can get them on most every special issue.... 2014 Kennedy halves included

  The originals are first generation black NGC slabs which were quickly changed based on dealer feedback and are now very rare and bring a lot of money from slab collectors. Because of their fame, NGC started making the black NGC slab again but the retro slabs bear little resemblance to the originals.

  Haha yeah, auto correct got me, I'm seeing other coins in them
  as well, Morgans, Prez Dollars mostly, in addition to the ase's

  From what I have understood the first NGC holders had the black inserts. NGC quickly changed from that to the white inserts. The original black NGC holders are just scarce. The coins in them, at least from the few pieces I have seen, graded in an ultra conservative way. Many of them seem to have been instant crack-out candidates, which have made them even rarer. Recently NGC has started to offer retro holders with the black inserts.

  Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
