Personally I liked the wheat better, not just in design but also since it was copper. I like the coins that carried some form of tradition that reached back to the beginning of our coinage roots in some way. The death knell to that was when they started making a bunch of different nickel designs more for collectors than commerce.

I agree that the wheat cent was the best of the Lincoln design. The 2005 Jefferson / buffalo was a nice design as well. The dime and half dollar have been the same for 65+ and 50 years, and need a major redesign.
As for the quarter, It was interesting seeing the new designs when the state quarters first came out, but now it would be even better if they redesigned the quarter and stayed with that design.
It would also be great if they put Liberty's picture back on the coins.
The U.S. Mint's 2013 Mount Rushmore quarter won "Best Circulating Coin" in the annual Coin of the Year competition, which is international in scope. It had a lot of competition. I think it's a well-deserved award!

Beautiful coins --- they were minted from 1908 to 1935, and you can find them for a couple dollars in nice condition. I believe the 1921 or 1922 was the last date struck for circulation, and they're rare after that.
Depends. If we are talking just circulating coins, yeah, very boring. But if we include NCLT and medals, I'd say it's a long, long way from a low point.
I think the low point was 1965 as we had the beginning of the ugly clad coinage, no commemoratives whatsoever, no proof coins as the SMS Mint sets were the best that were offered, no bullion or precious metal coins to be purchased as well.
I think that given the plethora of coins being produced, the designs will by the very nature of the quantity needed, disappoint some.
Look at the difference in designs from the golden age of coins, the Walking Liberty half versus the Kennedy, the Mercury dime versus the Roosevelt dime, the Buffalo nickel versus the Jefferson nickel, the Standing Liberty quarter versus the Washington (which I collected for a while). If you collected coins in 1916 there were so many better coins and I have not mentioned the gold coins which were spectacular.
I think the CACC and Mint are doing their best with designs, remembering how many hands are in the process.

I'll chime in with one more example-- 1839 to 1891 had the liberty seated design, in one form or another, on six different denominations. I don't dislike the design but seeing it on that many coins for that long must have had collectors longing for something else.

There are many crass, commercialized modern coins... particularly in the SHQ's.... however, there are also some very nice designs .... My opinion is, they could do a lot better on circulating designs if they allowed artists more license and stopped the 'design by committee' practice....Cheers, RickO
