Sears is still around? Wow. They pulled outta this burg a decade or more ago. I went past their old storefront the other day. It's something else, now- maybe even vacant since the '08 downturn. But I fondly remembered buying my first real metal detector there, back in '81. *sigh*

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

Sears and their partner K-Mart have been moribund for some time.

Would be nice if they put in a coin case at the nearby Super-K though.

WRONG! Sears is not selling coins!
Liberty Coin is selling coins on the Sears website which is just like amazon, overstock and many more.

Sears stock has been on a long painful decline for about 4 years now. The one by me never has anything I want and going there ultimately delays my trip to Home Depot. At this point
I'd expect to see coins at Home Depot before Sears.

And usually that is piggy backed as a sponsored add on eBay. I have found most prices to be at least 100% over full retail if one does some real shopping around and not be lead to the slaughter like a dumb animal.

More like 40 years on the Sears decline.

Having said that, the market cap on the combined Kmart/Sears (SHLD) is under $3 billion.

I may have to cash in a few coins and pick up some stock......

    Correct.

There was a news story on TV Last night about Sears selling a Swastika Ring but it wasn't Sears doing the selling. Instead it was a third party vendor.

Now, "IF" Sears was somehow able to become a US Mint Distribution Center where I could go stand in line for a Kennedy Silver Set on October 24th..................Nah!

    Oops. Sorry. Oct 28th.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    I used to love Sears!

Crafstman Products were the greatest and the store stood behind them. If something went wrong with ANY Craftsman tool, you could take it back and either get a refund or a replacement.

That worked GREAT...............until the scammers figured out how to bring the program to its knees.

Picking through garbage dumps and returning items that they never originally purchased for replacements/refunds just killed the program.

Today, Craftsman products appear to be made in China with the cheapest quality control ever.

Branching out was probably not a smart move for Sears since it cost them "this" customer who used to exclusively shop at Sears.

Well....................their 24-28% Interest on their charge accounts didn't help either.

Now they want you to have the original receipt for the warranty as well.

"Sears Marketplace" is a lame attemp to be like Amazon.
Read the selling rules and fees and you will see why prices are so hgh.

The prices are so high that it looks bad for the hobby and they should shut
it down (they being something like the federal trade commision)

When did they stop the lifetime garantee on hand tools? it worked fine a few years ago when i took
back a broken wrench. the offer was good to the bearer of the goods and you never need to show id or recepts.
How many tools are found in dumpsters ? i bet not many!

There are couple of things I have never understood.

First, years ago K-Mart was in bankruptcy and then all at once they bought Sears out of what appeared to be thin air. Now what was that? It reminded of the merger between the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central. Two sick companies come together to make one big sick company. The difference is the merger has survived longer.

Second, you walk into a K-Mart and seems to be laid out like a Walmart, or the stores down here and in southern Delaware are like that. Beyond that the resemblance ends. Somehow K-Mart makes everything look shoddy. I know, I know, a lot of people don't like Walmart, but as a movie buff I've had a lot of fun pawing through their $5 movie bin over the years.

They still have it but they insist you have the original receipt from 35 years ago. I had a shovel handle snap on me last year and when I went to exchange it I found
out about the receipt requirement. The manager let me exchange it anyway since she knew me.

I had an elderly friend who's ratchet came apart. When he went to exchange it at Sears, they gave him a parts kit with the smallest bearings ever and tiny springs and told him to fix it.

Neither of us shop there anymore. Nor do they make quality tools. Having quality tools used to be part of my livelihood. Just couldn't trust them to come through for us any more.

There was a time when Walmart asked questions on their appls; 'do you believe in the second coming? and 'can you hold your bladder for 8 hours? The only thing I get from there is my wife's meds. Otherwise, I spend my money at K-Mart.

K marts are closing faster than Sears but not by much as they both suck and good riddance.

Not true. I exchanged an old screw driver six months ago and they never asked for a receipt. They ship the old tool back to Craftsman so if you give them the old tool, they should be satisfied.

Also, the tools aren't in dumpsters because they are at pawn shops image

Love my Craftsman tools.Wouldn't trade them.
But then I digress from this forum.....

If they ever broke on you, I bet you would trade them in ... for new ones. That's what I do.

And even if they aren't broken, might be a good idea to trade in for some fresh tools before they close their doors image

Entering bankruptcy allows you to break contracts with no repercussions. When K-Mart entered bankruptcy it allowed them to reorganize the business and ignore rules set by lenders as to store closings, and by suppliers such as minimum order quantities and other things of that nature. The freedom that gave them allowed them to suddenly close massive number of underperforming stores. As it turns out, they actually purchased the land that these stores were on, rather than leasing, so with the newly closed locations available they were able to sell the underlying real estate. That gave them a huge cash infusion which they used to purchase Sears, which they viewed as an underpriced gem. It actually turned out to be a giant turd, but there you go.

As to making everything look shoddy, yes, that's what happens when your stores are super old and outdated, with yellow fixtures, yellow floor tiles, and a generally distressed building, and the shelves are half empty, and you fail to remove products that are in distressed condition such as with torn packaging, or just simply super old and beat up stuff. And when you allow your staff to work in regular street clothes rather than something somewhat resembling a uniform. In that environment, there will be far fewer people shopping, which is depressing in itself, and everything will look dumpy, even brand new, perfectly good merchandise.

Their store here in my region is closing right after Christmas. Won't miss it.

I like Craftsmen tools, but don't get them near the numismatic department.
