1821 cent in VF-30 or 44-S Walker in MS-66?

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,917 ✭✭✭✭✭
Both PCGS graded and nice for the grade, and the 44-S is also well struck. Assuming both are close in price, which would you choose?

One is scarce, while the other is pretty. Do you want to impress another collector, or a non-collector?

This isn't a hard choice at all.

Unless you've been seeking a 44S with an exceptional strike and this is the first you've found to meet your criteria,
I'd go with the large cent also. You'll likely find another 44S walker in 66 sooner. But don't settle for a dark '21 cent, there
are plenty of those around in VF, despite the low mintage.

I am with the crowd -- definitely the 1821 cent. Not fair, of course, since I collected large cents
many years ago, and am getting back to them now that I am older. A choice early cent with nice
color is a thing of beauty.

I'll take the large cent, please.

(Though both admittedly have their merits.)

They are both classics. I would not call Walkers widgets at all.

I guess it depends on what you collect. A 44-S Walker in 66 is not that easy to find with nice strike.

1944S Walkers with good luster and exceptional strikes are quite rare. I also like coins that are of a higher grade than something such as a VF, as MS coins are what I collect. I'd choose the Walker but I am, of course, a bit partial. image

The large cent, even though I don't want either of them. The large cent is several hundred times harder to find, especially with no problems and not net graded.

Two quite different coins, I would choose the cent, but it also depends upon your own collection. Coins are never bought in a vacuum, unless you are looking to resell them. For my own collection it would clearly be the 1821.

As long as the surfaces and color were good, I'd take the 1821 all day, every day - including Sunday image

You need to ask? And yes, late date walkers are certainly widgets, even in MS66.

I am anticipating the pop on the 66 walker is high and readily available, so i would go with the cent. However, if the cent is not attractive for the grade (In my eyes) I would go with the pretty walker.
