Jumped on this one, b/c of the above average strike, surfaces and luster. Nice 1942-S coins are really hard to find. What do you think?

I like it, but it looks AU to me.

How did you arrive at that conclusion?

<< <i>I like it to, but doesn't the strike seem soft in the middle(Liberty's leg and the eagle's leg)? >>
Soft yes but not for a 1942-S. Liberty's leg is full (skirt lines). Yes, eagle's leg is a bit soft.

edited to add- Keep in mind how large the image is- I suspect it looks even better in hand
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Perhaps the small high point toning spot on the obv, and/or central region strike, is being confused with rub for some, but there is clearly no wear. The unbroken luster band in the right obv field also helps attest to this (good job capturing that in the photo, btw!).

<< <i>That's a very good strike for a 42-S. Did you pick it up raw? >>
Thanks. Nope, not raw. I always wanted a 'rattler' so this is my first.

LVT -you will look a while to find a full split thumb on a 42-S although they apparently exist (I haven't seen one). Interestingly, according to Fox there is a 42-S out there with proof-like characteristics that was sold in a Superior sale in 1986. It would be interesting to know where it resides today.

so yeah after looking...this is way up there for strike
hopefully no offence was taken or implied...i learned something new...42-s walkers have strike issues
sweet example
<< <i>yeah i was just looking at heritage auctions and this year mint looks like a booger....almost like a 45 mercury dime with split bands

Thanks. No offense taken at all. Glad that you were able to learn about the 1942-S.

Very Cool! I like it!
Now try to find a nice, well struck 1940-S in Gem. They cost about half of the more popular 41-S, and cost less than the 42-S, but they seem to be scarce as hen's teeth!

I feel so juvenile, however, was the first thing that caught my eye.
So, evidently, has Great eye appeal!
Beautiful Coin.

<< <i>Nice coin. The minor dings at the bottom of the sun rays caught my attention.
I kind of agree with you here. I like the coin at a 64, the hits in the sun, which is the main focal area on Walkers keeps it out of the 65 level for me.

The coin has no rub whatsoever and the luster bands are far too prominant for the coin to be an AU coin IMHO. The only area in question is the spot on the breast, which is directly over a circular die marker or imperfection that is very specific to 1942-S coins. So I am guessing that the spot is either a toning spot or a manufacturing flaw.
The fact that both PCGS and JA at CAC like the coin is testament enough for me, as well.
Thank you ALL so much for your candid responses. I appreciate and welcome them always.
Connecticoin--I have a nice 1940-S in an OGH MS 65. I can post it later tonight.

I looked at it several times with a loupe, when I first acquired it, and it doesn't look like rub to me. Judging by the shape and the borders---it looks like it was caused by the dies during the minting process.

That I would like to see! I will have to dig out mine -- I actually made one in PCGS 65 but don't remember what it looks like!!
