I have a lot of examples I could share, here's one of them:

saw what looked like a decent coin on ebay with sub par photos. Recognized the die marriage as an R4. Thought it might be a nice coin. The coin was raw. Once received, I thought it appeared low mint state in hand, so I sent it to PCGS. Now resides in a PCGS MS62 holder with a green CAC sticker. It is the finest known for the die marriage, besting a couple MS61 graded examples not only by a point of grade, but also in eye appeal. I paid $220 and expect that if this coin were sold in the right auction (specialist auction) or directly via private treaty to the right person, it would bring in excess of $1500

edit to correct something: A friend pointed out there is an MS63 in the census, he is correct. When I got the coin, there was no MS63 in the census and this coin was the finest. It has since been surpassed. I just didn't check the census for this coin's status. Still, I'm sure my coin is better, simply because it is mine image

    and just one more story...

This coin looks like typical ebay garbage, right?

Not so fast. I attributed it from the barely OK photos on ebay to be 1832 LM-9.2. That's an R7+ die remarriage in the capped bust half dime series. I believe when I got this coin (for less than fifty dollars) it became the fourth or fifth known example. What that means is that most collectors, even the most advanced collectors with nearly complete sets, lack an example of this die remarriage.

One of those advanced collectors had a duplicate of a strong R6 die marriage that would make an improvement to my set. His coin was also raw. We agreed to a trade. I traded my raw 1832 LM-9.2 for his raw 1829 LM-8. Since the trade happened at a FUN Show, I took advantage of show grading by PCGS ($100) to get my coin graded. The image below is my PCGS AU-55 (CAC) 1829 LM-8. For a perspective on value, consider that an NGC AU58 example of this same die marriage sold for $11,750 in 2013 in a Heritage Auction. So for my fifty dollars, I think I did OK

This is the reverse of my 1913 T1 Buffalo nickel that is an NGC MS65 and I got this nice little steel blue beauty for a very good price and in my opinion it would bring higher than full list because the obverse is just as nice and this Buff has a heck of a lot of luster. I of course could just be me as I really love toned Buffs in this color but I would bet others would agree with me. When I get my camera set up set back up I will post better picks.

This was an Ebay Auction that I won for $750.00. It was graded AU-58 and was in an NGC holder as an Doubled Die Obverse FS-101.
When I received it in the mail I noticed that it was an FS-103. I had it graded by PCGS and it came back 1943 DDO FS-103 AU-58. I sold it a week later for $6,300.00 with a trade.
The new owner later sold it at Heritage for $10,300.00. I sent the Ebay seller some extra money for it after I had it graded.

This one was on an Ebay Auction for $7.90 for a week. I told the owner what it was and he sold it for less than what I wanted to pay him. He told me that because I told him about it, He would sell it to me for half of what I was willing to pay him. It was raw and I didn't know if it has been cleaned so I left it at that and bought it from him. I had it graded at PCGS and it came back 1943 DDO FS-103 MS-62. The price guide for an MS-64 is 30K
This one is worth around 17K IMO.

Don't have pics, but a couple months ago I bought a 1928 $2.5 Indian on eBay raw for MS61 money because it looked better than a 61 and it came back a 64, needless to say I was very happy image

Saw this one on eBay close to 10 years ago unattributed in an NNC MS-62 holder with a starting bid of $175. Was sure it was the 3-1/2 legger even though the photo wasn't that great. Watched it all week as it drew no apparent interest and placed a last second bid for well in excess of that, don't remember the exact number now. Got it for starting bid, don't know if anyone else saw it, (there were fewer people cherrypicking Buffalo varieties then) or whether they were scared off by the NNC slab. Finally sent it in to our hosts last year and it came back AU-58. Last time I check pop reports, it was tied for fourth-best known.

Picked this 1841-O WB-102 off eBay for just over $200. It's the "baseball crack" reverse variety. Dick Osburn's lightly cleaned example in PCGS XF45 just brought $3,100 in a Heritage auction last month. Heritage has sold only 3 of them over the years in all grades, as far as I can tell.

These are all cool stories, but panther - those Washington quarter picks were amazing! Had no idea those were worth so much. And it sounds like you did the deals in a classy way image
