Remind Me to Buy 3CS's in Rattlers When I See Them...

Because this XF40 sold for MS62 money...
The coin looks slightly under-graded, but is that all? Am I overlooking some rare die variety?
Or are two people coincidentally building a set of these in Rattler holders and were both missing this date?
Whatever the case, I'm glad DKRC sold it. Some of Dave's coins have been selling too cheap lately, IMO.

<< <i>Because it's a legit business strike, and it looks like an AU50 by today's standards. That's my gander, since looking like a legit business strike seems to be a pretty big deal in 3c series. >>
Why did this legit business strike in a Rattler graded 15 points higher sell for roughly the same price?
But I hope this coin actually is a business strike since the coin number on the holder (3717) is the proof number. Not sure what to make of that - typo? did the PCGS numbers change for this coin at some point? Did PCGS call circ. proofs XF40 instead of PF40 back in the day?

The AU-55 looks like it has been dipped and the EF-40 looks to be original. A lot of collectors seem to shun circulated coins that are white from dipping these days.
Original...
Behind that skin is very little sign of wear.
More than a little under graded IMO. Original skin goes a long way.

<< <i>I think Indeetlib may have it right. Can't tell from the images for certain, but it has the "look & feel' of a proof to my eyes. >>
I am pretty confident that Dave Kahn knows this is 100% a business strike coin or he would not offer it as such. You wont find a more honest down to earth straight up dealer.
I think that you are both right. David Kahn is a coin guru and highly ethical, but so is Indeetlib. And DaveW is right that you "cannot tell from the images for certain." FWIW, I am in the circ Proof camp.

What he said. It doesn't look much different than a Mint State coin to me. Where's the wear? And it's a far more pleasing coin than that AU55 with an old dipping/light cleaning.
Looks to have rounded rims and weakish details (stair points and ridges, shield lines, etc.).
