Most social networking websites have users registered with their real names. Associating their accounts with anything coin related sounds like a terrible idea, yet I've seen many pages on Facebook with 1,000+ "likes" from people with full names showing...

As much as free social media should be used to promote coin shows and coins the truth is the main demographics of the numismatic community are predominately old men who yearn for the good old days who miss snail mail and how things used to be back in the 50's. Social media is a new concept that the younger people have embraced but the older, nostalgic types largely refuse to because it is new and they hate new ideas. For those but not limited to those reasons there is a lack of numismatic promotion on social media and a good majority of the numismatic community prefer to keep it that way. Although the rest of America hasn't touched the yellow pages in two decades it is shocking how many coin people still use the phone book as their primary source for finding businesses.

I've seen a few dealers list coins and host groups on Facebook.
Also seen site's like eBay coins for sale, Heritage and even PCGS, come on the recommend items for you.
I live in a gated community and keep the good stuff in a bank box so my name and address I feel aren't state secrets.

BTW know I'm older than Wei or Dave and I have the YP app on the phone.

I'm 55 and don't fit your "catch all" old man demographic. I liken
this statement to someone claiming that all Oriental Amercans are
slender and eat lots of rice. We KNOW thats not true.

That reminds me of the sex ed class we took in junior high. Teacher: "even when you're adults don't feel bad if you haven't done it. Polls show of men 26 years old only 95 percent of them have had the experience. So not everybody has done it."

Yeah, not everybody, just the overwhelming vast majority. And as for the adults who haven't had the chance to do it, we are on a numismatic forum and there is a correlation but I'll save that topic for next time.

I'd say that WTCG hit the nail pretty much on the head.

Of the roughly 35 members of my coin club, I'd say that no more than five of us even know that the PCGS and NGC boards exist. (Whenever I mention something I read on the boards, all I get back are blank stares.)

More of us seem to know that eBay exists, but I'd be surprised if even ten of us have ever bought anything on eBay.

We distribute Club mailings by email (all but two or three members have email addresses), but I'd be surprised if more than 10 members use email regularly.

Most of the Club members are pretty security conscious, so I think they'd be uncomfortable having their real names associated widely with coin collecting.

Also, most coin collectors aren't what you'd call "social" anyway.

I'm actually reducing my personal social media footprint for now. Too many security holes. I think the market will ask for something else to come along with better security in the future. However, if I had a public coin show, auction house, or coin business, I would do it. I do promote one of my businesses on FB.

I'm on social media sites all the time. In my early 30's. It is a huge part of my business, being involved in social media; self promotion. People younger than me LIVE on social media. Saturday morning cartoons no longer exist because too many kids/teens are stimulated by twitter, youtube, and Facebook. Who ever gets with the social media first stands to gain the most as time goes by. IMO, of course.

Citing security and other issues, coin people are almost more clandestine about their hobby than other far more embarrassing and taboo hobbies. By the way many coin people act you would think collecting coins carried a minimum 10 year sentence.

Yep too. I'm 56. I don't consider myself a technophobe. I've even built all my own computers over the years. But I have no use for social media. I don't see what's the big draw. Generally it just seems like it's just a big time waster. I guess it's for the young.

Think of all the people (like myself) that are in the midwest and never get to attend an East or West coast show. I'd LOVE to see and bid/buy coins at the show, if only dealers would post them.

Im actually shocked no one has done a virtual bourse yet so visitors that cannot fly to FUN, Long Beach, ANA Show ect, can actually attend and walk the floor.

I just tested an Oculus Rift 360 degree 3D device today ( https://www.oculus.com/ ) and it was quite amazing. I was on stage with Paul McCartney ( http://thenextweb.com/insider/2014/11/20/paul-mccartney-jaunt-release-awesome-360-degree-concert-video-google-cardboard/ ) and it was unbelievable.

At some point live streaming will come to OR and instead of having a dealer look for coins you can have a personal shopper walk the bourse add a credit card and ta-da - no need to fly in just to see the floor. Well maybe it will start with auctions. I can see Heritage incorporating something like this before CU jumps on it.

Posted a few numismatic things on Facebook and the 2 people who liked those posts know nothing about coins.
I take that back… Someone posted a table here that was "done up" and embellished with 5000 cents a few weeks back. My niece posted a link to that table on my Facebook page like a week or two after it was a thread here.

I just wanted to say to her: "This is boring as bat _ _ _ _", but that wouldn't be nice on social media

Yes, my local club started using Facebook last year, and I will be using Twitter this year as well.

I also use something called TAP (The Alternative Press). They are an network that sends detailed local news almost immediately when things happen, plus a lot more. They also have their own social media as well.
