Another Asian 16-D. What a shocker. Reported- but doubt anyone will do anything since they gutted CCW.

Here's his response on my telling him it is not a real US Mint made coin:

    Dear greatbasincoins,

Thanks, but I've had two coin dealers look at the coin and said it is genuine. Thanks

He is playing games the angles of the photos and the lighting. Just ignore him. This are the ploies that those who market Chinese counterfeits use as fly paper to catch the greedy, the uninformed and the uneducated.

If it doesn't sell there, you have to wonder what those 2 dealers would offer him for the coin.

  • How do you know it's fake by just looking at pictures?
I sold a Morgan dollar not too long ago that I know was real and I got a message from someone calling it a "coin made in China."
Their are tests you can do to determine if it is real if you have the coin in hand.

The "D" looks wrong; the hole should have a triangular shape. Here's a real one:

there are obvious signs a coin is fake if ou know what to look for

those at home tests can be passed by some newer fakes made today. some counterfeiters are selling 90% silver 10% copper counterfeits now. what test do you do for them?

For a large portion of the fakes that appear, there are tell-tale signs that make them stick out like sore thumbs to experienced eyes. It like they have a flashing, bright red, neon light screaming "FAKE!!! COUNTERFEIT!!! MADE IN CHINA!!!". As you become more experienced, you will learn, or get poor very fast.

Experience. If you cannot tell that coin is a fake, you better just stick with PCGS slab coins.

Do you still have pictures of the Morgan dollar that you sold? If so, post them. We might be able to teach you something...

So what if it's fake........it still has nice aged patina. That's gotta be worth something. image

  • Hey how about this? Welcome to the board RoyinTX. This is a great place to learn but expect answers to be blunt and snotty. Beaning able to deal with that will be your key to a world of information and learning you could not get any where else. The 16 D is fake and is screaming so as the shape and location of the D are wrong among other issues.
