New Dahlonega $5

Not exactly dirty but certainly wholesome, this 55-D is the third rarest Dahlonega half eagle behind the 42 Large Date and the 61-D. This 55-D, while incorrectly labeled is the rare medium D which Coinfacts notes as having an estimated population of only 25 surviving (though I'd love to hear from JJSingleton and GeorgeKellogg on their thoughts).

Very Nice Southern Mint Half Eagle...Congrats
<< <i>A very nice addition to your collection. Are you going to get the label changed? >>
Yes, will do so around the ANA time.

I agree that it's a Medium D. Doug's book (3rd Edition) is incorrect about the Medium D being the scarcer of the two varieties -- the Large D is much scarcer. When I reviewed the draft, the Large D was correctly listed as the scarcer of the two varieties, but the published version had reverted back to the language of the 2nd Edition.
What may have confused Doug is that many Medium Ds are incorrectly certified as Large Ds, giving the false impression that the Medium D is scarcer. For example, of the seven CoinFacts photos of 1855-D half eagles, six are the Medium D and one is the Large D. Unfortunately, five of the six Medium D coins are incorrectly listed as the Large D.
was told not original. Well not wanting to stick it to anyone I sold it to a dealer and he cracks and gets put in a au55Cac
So the coin doesn't pass as an E F
but does as an AU
<< <i>This gets me mad. I sent that coin to CAC in a pcgs ef40 holder for a lock gold and it got shot down. NO bean at all

do you have any pix of the coin when you had it? i believe you...i'm just curious to see it in it's previous holder.
sorry man. that's a tough break. i usually part with coins that don't cac and never look back...but i have had a similar thing happen to me. i had a gold dollar that i took a bath on because it didn't cac, i sold it...later, i saw it cracked, graded the same then cac'd. it happens.
Every time I see a post by the OP concerning a new Dahlonega half eagle, I get my hopes up that the elusive '48 D/D has resurfaced. Alas, 'tis not to be. Not yet, anyway.
<< <i>Nice coin, and interesting.....if that's the medium D for this date, then that large D must be huge! >>
Here's the CoinFacts photo of the Large D variety.
<< <i>Those stickers aren't worth beans. >>
My education continues. God bless this place.

I feel the same way about the newer PCGS holders, much like the "new day" at ANACS a few years ago,
the coins in these holders are suspicious, the standards are compromised.

<< <i>I like it, grade and/or sticker notwithstanding. It appears to have a decent amount of luster present, and no serious detractions.

The search continues. I would love to own that coin!

I do agree this is a medium D. And I believe everything GeorgeKellogg says.
