"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.
I occasionally bring in a coin to mail for a sale as their is a post office in my office building. Most of my responses are in the polite indifference range. I did meet a type collector once and I inspired him to get active again. One time when I sold a 1909/8 double eagle there was a little word of mouth that caused a few people to approach me and ask coin related questions but that was a long time ago (as proof by the DE went for under 1k).
Mostly I don't, usually too many people I don't know around to be showing off.
Just as info I recently moved and don't know the new friends well enough to be showing off the expensive stuff yet. No I am not paranoid and that expensive of stuff stays at the bank anyway.
The only thing of value I ever showed a core worker was something I could not hid like one of my cars I fixed up. Kind of hard to hide a 63 Ford Falcon with a 289 hi/po with a big cam and single chamber flowmasters on it.
You have to crack it out of the plastic before you could EVEN put it in the Coke machine!

Well, first of all...I wouldn't tell them how much I paid for it or how much I think it's worth.
Second, when I show it to them, they probably say "That's nice. What's it worth?" Going back to my first point above, my response would be something like "Not much. I just think it's cool because it's from the 18th Century (or some other reason)."

This is my typical conversation when I show someone an old expensive coin......
"Wow, that's pretty old. You know I have ALOT of REALLY OLD coins too that my dad gave me. Some so old they are the wheat pennies. They stopped making those A LONG time ago. I also have some wheat pennies that are silver, those are super rare and worth ALOT. I even have about 10 or 12 of those old Bicentennial Quarters, you know, the ones with 2 dates on them. A few of those are in MINT condition. I'm holding onto them though. Hey, did you hear that xxxxx got in trouble for not calling someone back? Wanna go to the snack machine?"

Omg, it's a hypothetical question, guys. A lot of people wouldn't tell or show co-workers or friends, but IF you did, how would they react? Have fun with it.

Which actually is a fair question to ask

If your Wife was a friend before, she won't be after.
"Are you ready for the meeting tomorrow?"
I don't even bother anymore.

I'll give you $100 CASH for it right now !
Thinking you're desperate for cash and have grossly inflated the value.

"Geeze, you pretty much could've played the main event of the WSOP for that!"
Stop right there. I do what??
