So would an Elvis coin or a Marilyn coin be so off base? Here's an idea, make them $2 coins, circulating, to get people used to higher value coins

For the record, Elvis and Marilyn have already been on coins (just not USA coins). They have also both already been on USA stamps.

Why not Elvis and Marilyn on coin?

Because we have enough commemorative coins already, and many collectors don't want them. As the others have said the Post Office Department ruined stamp collecting by issuing too much stuff. We are headed that way with coins, and we don't need as many as we have now.

And for the record (no pun intended) Elvis was a great innovator and a tremendous talent in the world of music. His life was made sadder by an agent who sucked the money and life out him like a vampire. He should be remembered, but not a U.S. coin.

Marilyn Monroe was a sad, sad case. Her mother who was mentally ill abandoned her to foster homes several times. Her lifelong insecurities undoubtedly grew out of her unhappy childhood. When she was a teenager she got married to avoid being placed in an institution. She spent much of life worried that she would become insane like her mother.

Although she was a brilliant comedian she could never appreciate her talents and wanted more. Unfortunately her erratic behavior and inability to learn her lines and get to work on time ruined her film career. Of her three marriages, Joe DiMaggio probably loved her the most, but as a protective and overbearing husband with an ethic attitude toward "a woman's place." He also beat her and refused to allow her to pursue her dreams as a movie star. She had as much of public life as he did and deserved to pursue her career.

The woman we see on the posters and ads projects a beautiful, glamorous and sexy image, but the person behind the façade was a very troubled , sad person. She was constantly looking for the father she never knew and the career that her mental problems prevented her from achieving. Among her films, I would recommend "Some Like It Hot," "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds," and "Bus Stop" which was her best acting performance. Also you might catch "Don't Bother to Knock," which is seldom seen chiller about mental illness.

USPS did an excellent job with the designs of the Harry Potter stamps.

It would be good to see more popular figures on coins. I still wish they did a Presidential Quarter series that was in circulation.

The legal owners of Marilyn Monroe's and Elvis Presley's images would charge a fortune
to allow the US Mint to do this.

    However...

I would add that Elvis was considered for the male lead in the film "West Side Story," but "the vampire" rejected it. That could have been the enduring crowning achievement of Elvis' career. None of the Elvis movies amounted to much, but that one took a record number of Academy Awards without a best actor nomination for the male lead. It would have been interesting to have heard Elvis sing "Maria" and "Tonight." He had the voice for it. Just listen to "This Magic Moment."

Another member PM'd me that I should have added "Niagara" and "The Misfits" to my list of MM movies. "Niagara" is good despite the fact that she had a supporting role. It's also interesting to note that the producers build a temporary "motel" next to the falls for the movie. It was torn down after the production. People today ask if they can book rooms in it.

"The Misfits" was Arthur Miller's gift to Marilyn after they were married. It was not his best work, but it is definitely worth a look. If nothing else you get to see the last films for MM, Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift and Thelma Ritter.
