Novice needs advice

judgebuckjudgebuck Posts: 1,021 ✭✭✭
I think this is my first post on this forum. I'm a sports card guy. I have a small coin collection from my childhood 50 years ago. I need a little advice on the best way to sell it.

I have: 31 Mercury dimes, complete set of Roosevelt silver dimes, 8 early 1960s quarters, complete set of Jefferson nickels through 1969, 13 WL halves, 24 Franklin silver halves, complete set of Washington quarters (minus two keys), complete set of Lincoln pennies through 1965 (minus 11), 1909 S-VDB (fairly nice), 1931-S penny (unc.), 1959-1964 Lincoln proof pennies, and other small junk. Everything is average circulation, I think, since I collected them in the early 1960s.

Do you think I should offer on B/S/T here or list on eBay. Any tips for selling on eBay? I've sold a lot of sports cards there, but no coins. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Before you list to sell, I would recommend you post an image of the 09-SVDB to get the opinions of the members here.

Agreed - with a closeup of the date/mintmark

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

The prices would be highly dependent on grade

So, if you can post high quality photos here you might get some help

Without good photos I wouldn't sell them on eBay by yourself

You could consign them for eBay sales to a reputable forum member who would then sell them on eBay for you

20th century circulating coinage is not my area so I can't give much advice on pricing and selling. But do not try to shine your coins up by cleaning them. Leave them be. A cleaned coin has little value compared to one with original patina. Best of luck to you.

Is there a notable eBay cosignment seller that might accept this collection?

You might consider sending the better date stuff to GC.

Most of what you have is common silver if you can get someone (dealer, APMEX, other collector) to pay you near 15-15.5X face you are doing fine. The 31-S is an eBay Auction item, set it and let it rip. The 09-S VDB needs to go to PCGS to confirm it is genuine and what the grade is. Then you can offer that to a dealer or put it on eBay. But be prepared, the prices on those have come down in the last couple of years.

Give the rest of to some youngster who will get a thrill out of it, or cash it in at the bank.

Thanks for the advice. There is a lot of low value stuff here. And, although I got the 1909 S-VDB 45 or so years ago, I know it needs to be graded to at least authenticate it. The 15-15.5% info is also helpful. Thanks for all your comments.

I would recommend looking for a Coin Show in your area. For the generic silver, you can ask around for who is paying the most. For the key date coins you can get bids from different dealers.
