Slab design improvement RE: scratch prevention

ms70ms70 Posts: 13,956 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was just looking a a few of my current purchases and every one has scratches over the coin, even the most recently holdered ones. I know how to get rid of the scratches but
that's not what I'm posting about.

I just want to suggest to PCGS that raising the perimeter rim on both sides just a tiny bit would likely help prevent a lot of scratches. The surface of the viewing area
is equal or nearly equal to the rim. The slightest movement of the slab on any surface will likely make debris contact the viewing area.

That is all. Have a nice day. image

I find the PolyPro PVC-free standard postcard sleeves hold both TPG slabs perfectly and protect for pennies. I know this is not practical on the bourse, but at home...the slabs stay perfectly new forever.

Slab scratches irritate me..... I do wish either the design or material could be changed. They make a liquid that is applied to plastic lenses of eyeglasses that makes them scratch resistant... hmmmmm, wonder if it would work on slabs. Will have to look into this. Cheers, RickO

Did you mean baseball card sleeves? I've received a few slabs in the mail that were protected by baseball card sleeves - seems like postcard sleeves would be too big.

I also wish the design could be improved to minimize scratches. There is lots to consider - including what will fit in the storage boxes.

No, I meant postcard sleeves as I have thousands of postcards and photographs and tons of sleeves and I was storing my slabs in a binder with postcard pages (sleeve goes in pocket open end down so no falling out). Even the postcard sleeves come in various sizes (US, UK etc.) - I used what was on hand but a check of the sizes available and the dimensions of a slab would be good.

I wonder if someone makes a small rigid plastic case just slightly larger and thicker than a slab-maybe something similar to a snap-lock case. I store my slabs in the pages Lighthouse makes for them and such a thing might work well there.

This is the benefit of NGC holders in that they are less likely to get scratched.

I remember a dealer telling me some years ago what a money maker it is for pcgs in that people have to constantly reslab their coins

I have purchased a couple of PCGS coins at a local show that were in exact fit zip lock type baggies. Take up virtually no extra space. On the flip end of slab scratches, don't you love finding that coin you have been hunting in a virtually scratch free older holder? Kind of a gauge that the coin hasn't been bouncing around from dealer to dealer......or show to show. IMO.
