Vanishing Spot on proof gold BHOF?

This coin came back from grading yesterday.

image

You see that stain/spot where the arrow points? It's easily noticeable in the True View, but when I took it out of its delivery packaging yesterday, it was VERY noticeable. It was quite dark and really stood out.

I didn't have much time for that yesterday, but when I woke up this morning I wanted to look at it again and photograph it to see if anyone here could explain why it is so different from the photo.

But it isn't. This morning the dark stain is gone - it looks like the photo.

How can a spot like that bloom and fade?

The only factor that I haven't mentioned is that it has been very humid for several days but it spent last night in a well desiccated safe. Is it possible for high humidity to cause a bloom that goes away with dryness?

Some sort of confused Tooth Fairy? First she gave you all those coins under your pillow when you lost teeth, now in later years she comes and removes spots on your coins while you sleep? Well...maybe not.

Is this spot half covered by the arrow and to the left of the red? I see 2 more of the same size quite close so I doubt that is it. It is likely the desiccant has something to do with whatever is going on I think.

    Best wishes,

I'm not really sure exactly where it was now. That area, yes, but precisely, I don't know. I wish I had taken the time to photograph it yesterday.

Oh well. It's on its way to the SDB for a long nap. I wonder what it will look like when it comes out.

I don't see a spot there in the pic. Is it like a transparent milk spot centered on the arrow point?

Maybe whatever it is only shows in certain lighting.

I see no spot in that picture.... maybe it vanished like it did on the coin.... Cheers, RickO

I don't think it was lighting, though I was in bright sunlight - I'll take it outside in a bit to see.

Spot, irregularity, scratch, abrasion, whatever - something is there and it looked much darker yesterday.

    Yes! Good call, MsMorrisine.

In sunlight it shows up very dark. But even under the halogen in my kitchen, it doesn't.

My first dealers, some 35 years ago (RIP Mel and Marty), told me lighting was extremely important because it dictated what I could see and would/would not see - he instructed me to always look at a coin ("...look at it upside down, right side up...and rotate on every axis!!!") in direct sunlight when possible. "Where hairline? THERE hairline(s)!" It was one of the quicker lessons with the most immediate payoff.

I agree, though I didn't expect darkness image
