A couple years ago Kelly Ripa and her husband came in my store and bought a little inexpensive ring.

Also got to meet boxer Winky Wright there.

And last but not least, years ago when I worked at my parents jewelry store in Balto. I spoke with actor Joel Grey at Faidley's Seafood in the Lexington Market,
He was getting a takeout......fried oysters.

It ain't much, but it's all I got...

    ?grammar? what's that
  • In Austin, one quite often met (meets) prominent politicians and musicians. This was especially true in the 60's and early 70's when Austin was still small.

One of my favorite stories (from his earliest career period) is how a couple of my cousins were LBJ's most-feared political opponents.

I believe that was Billy Ripken. >>

And it wasn't Billy who wrote it. His teammates did as a joke.
  • I didn't see anyone of any interest, didn't have anything cool happen, didn't meet anybody cool or different, have no possibility of any of this happening in the future, nobody that meets me will mistake me for anybody, BUT...I wake up next to Medusa every day waving the check book and laughing.

The problem is I don't own a gun and don't have any legal prescriptions to correct this and become famous(or infamous).

Oh, also nobody will ever meet her in a grocery store.

    Respectfully, John Curlis

I once met Bobby Richardson and Mickey Rivers at the Steiner sports store in the Roosevelt Field mall. Had to pay a small fee for each of their autographs, though.image Nice guys!image

Speaking of great baseball players, Orioles third baseman Brooks Robinson did a signing at the Whitman Coin show in Baltimore last fall.

Now there's a great man and player!!!!!

Nice shot of the Orioles Hall of Famers!!!

Hawaii has more movie stars and musicians than sports greats. I'm a (now retired) tile setter. Once did a marble bar top for the drummer from Creedance Clearwater Revival. Doug and Laurie (something.) Nice people.
And had Pierce Brosnon stop by our table one night while out to dinner to talk to the couple that we were with.

Goldbully, just think of it this way, Cal Ripken met you today and wonder who in the hell was this guy. The world is a strange place, when I was Manager for Giant Food in Fort Belvoir Va, I had alot of Celebs come in my store treating me with respect. Sonny Jurg, Joe Theisman, Sam Huff, Chris Hamburger, Boog Powell and a few others. Oh I forget to mention Mayor Marion Barry sat next to my family at a movie once, I kept seeing him light his lighter up and hearing him say ouch. But it's cool meeting some of these guys. The most class act was Ray Lewis and Ernest Bryner having a cold ice tea with my wife and I a week before Training camp in Westminster Md, they treated us with the upmost respect. This was just after he came back after his Alanta trial. Again they are just like you amd me my friend.image

Just remembered ( Cal Ripken, O's Greats, Grocery Store ), there used to be a Cereal called Cal's Classic O's. I got an entire case of the stuff ( can't help myself - I'm a habitual collector of anything ). Anyway I was waiting for my ship to come in but with the way the economy is going, looks like I'm out of luck. On the other hand maybe truely hungry people will eat 20 year old cereal. image

****NOTE: this thread was started in 2008****

Looks like lccoins is looking for top dollar for Cal's signature on a PCGS PR70DCAM HOF Gold Proof.
Reggie, Frank Thomas, Ernie Banks, Dennis Eckersley, etc are all lower in price.

I sent a "short snorter" back to the daughter of a GI that passed in 1961. His daughter was only
12 and has few things of his. She's ecstatic to be getting this signed note.

Reggie or Cal would be good, but I'd just as soon take a COA to Cal's ballpark than pay a hefty premium for a signed cert.

I just saw Joe DiMaggio in Dinky Donuts....

Not really, but I did meet the Bionic man at the mall as a kid, and when we were doing the Boxing gig, went to a lunch meeting with Thomas Hearns, and later we got the X-mayor of Detroit Kwame to loan us Cobo arena. At the Cobo event, I got to hang out with LL Cool J, Kwame, and the rest of my boys...That was our first TV fight and we brought ESPN to D town. Our headline fighter got knocked out in 30 seconds...30 second fight KO

    Cool story!
Lee Smith, old great Chicago Cub pitcher, shops at the walmart my wife works at in Bossier City, La. She got his autograph for me. He's a regular there. I bought his rookie card and framed them both!

I was at Wrigley Field in 1985 when Lee Smith struck out Pete Rose as Rose attempted to break Ty Cobb's hits record....earlier in the day Rose tied the record, much to the chagrin of millions in Cincinnati! I was 11. image

It's my coolest sport story except for attending St. Augustine's Elementary in Kalamazoo, MI one year ahead of Derek Jeter....I was in 8th grade when he was in 7th. I've got the yearbook to prove it!
