I just said hello to #8 Cal Ripken at my local grocery store

GoldbullyGoldbully Posts: 16,854 ✭✭✭✭✭
I needed to get one more thing tonight for dinner, so I drove to Graul's Super Market which is about 1/4 mile from my house.

Not many people were there, and I noticed the light was on at the first check out stand with no one there except Cal Ripken.

Damn, he's a tall dude.

I said hello and he was cordial as always.

When I got outside, I then watched him get into his fancy black Honda Accord with his two kids inside.

He was headed back home to his gigantor mansion in Worthington Valley no doubt.

Kelly, his wife probably sent him out for the chore.

Last time I saw Cal(and girl friend Kelly) in a super market, was at the Safeway in 1983, when he was just a kid coming onto the baseball scene.

Well, that was worth a visit to the store....very cool.

What cool thing happened to you today???

I didn't meet Cal Ripkin today. Who's Cal Ripkin anyway? Some hot shot coin dealer?

Yeah . Right. Okay. I saw Dale Earnhart at the AM/PM this morning
and he has been dead for 5 or 6 years. Okay, so it was a life size card board cut-out, but it was still Dale not Little E ( thank God) . I can't believe they are still using Dale to sell stuff? And then the girl behind the counter said she likes my new hair cut and it makes me ," look allot younger and cute too " . imageimage

Got up this morning and the humidity was wayyyyyy down. Cut down a small tree that was totally unwanted.

Went to the PO to return some Gold & Plat but the %#$@ had new hours - now close at 1 PM instead of 3 PM. image

Will have to ship out on Monday by Express now.

I still have my 3 Cal Ripken Rookie Cards I found while in Italy as a member of the 509th Airborne. Don't think I will ever part with them. Packs of Topps were a Quarter - what a bargain.

Saw Cal tie the record at Camden Yards - thought that was cool. Didn't feel like spending a fortune just to see him actually break the record.

Cool, Garth Brooks lives down the street from me, owns a square mile here.

I have yet to run into him in the grocery, but the wife has.

Best thing to happen to me today was the kids getting excited about being taken for ice cream for no apparent reason. image

Hmmm, I once ran into Danny Bonaduce at the local grocery store (northwest Chicago suburbs).

I think I would have rather run into Cal Ripken image

At first I was thinking you saw Cal Worthington and his dog, Spot. Man that dinosaur has to be 100 by now. Wondered if they use stock footage of the geezer in the TV ads nowadays.

I said hello to Terry Bradshaw in the Pittsburgh airport in 1980(?) right after his infamous parting with Chuck Noll. Although he had the look of Hulk Hogan on his face at the time, he was as pleasant and as humorous as he is known to be today.

I agree, Cal is a class act. He's always a favorite here in Rochester, where he started his career. The Rochester Red Wings were Baltimore's AAA club for many years.

The highlight of my day was some guy at the grocery store thinking I'm Cal Ripken Jr. He was kind of goofy lookin' but seemed like a nice guy.

  • I took my 6 year old son to the Baton Rouge Hot Air Balloon Festival, listened to some blues and zydeco, saw the Army Parachute team drop like fire from the sky, ate some Dippin' Dots, saw the "balloon glow" where they light up the balloons at twilight, and watched a fantastic fireworks display with my son Zachary sitting in my lap on the grass.

It was a hell of a good day.image

It is always a highlight to cross paths with someone who has exceptional talent at something. Cal is certainly one of those guys.

Many years ago I was a 'line of play specialist' at a local country club. What I done basically was change cups, reposition tees and odds and ends work on the course. One day....we had a horrific thunderstorm rolling in, and I hightailed it back to the garage. As soon as I pulled in, Ed, the big old mechanic said. "get out to 13 and pick up a foursome and their caddies. Let the little guy ride up front".

When I got out there, damn if it wasnt Gary Player!

We joked around a bit, he gave me a 50 dollar tip and a good memory. And, he is short!

I have a lot more errors than Cal, that's a given image
