I owe Stone an apology!

MGLICKERMGLICKER Posts: 7,995 ✭✭✭
Not a major blunder one to be sure, but about a 7 on a scale of ten.

Over the weekend Stone started a thread about a one star shipping fee rating that he left for a seller on Ebay who charged $5 for an envelope with a stamp on it.

For the next 80 posts he was hammered by those that thought the low feedback was wrong. I cordially opined that since he knew the cost of shipping going in, it was wrong to hit the star rating. Many were not so cordial.

Frankly it is none of my business to suggest what feedback anyone should leave for any seller.

Many of us have become hypnotized by the mighty Ebay and no more want to tick them off than attempt to steal the Ruby Slippers from the Wicked Witch.

We obsequiously bow when the fees get jacked up from 2% to 4% to 6% to 10%. Our only savior it seems is to pay $16 a month and grovel in fear each time a new feedback hits the board. The 20% discount has become our deity and lord help anyone that threatens to take that out.

Stone is as fine and classy a forum member as this place has ever known. Was it worth throwing an exemplary numismatist under the bus for a damn feedback rating? No it was not, I will answer that for you.

The Hell with Ebay and what it has done to many of us. I had a small but successful business before Ebay and will make do without them in the future.

I'd complain about the shipping too! For $5 I expect, at minimum, a nicely padded mailer with insurance. Not an envelope with a stamp, that's ridiculous. I've received items from China shipped better than that and for free (sure the shipping was included, but a $15 item shipped free from China in a 3' long tube?). So does eBay now have to force sellers to disclose their exact shipping practices? If not otherwise stated, item will be shipped in a cheap envelope. For premium shipping, see below:

For a padded envelope: Add $1.50
    For extra tape: Add $0.50
For shipping this week: Add $2.00

Oh wait...."time and gas". Right....right.....that's not factored into the pre shipping profit at all.

Just Got a cent in the mail yesterday in an envelope with a stamp on it. It was in a mylar holder wrapped in cardboard wrapped in white paper and you could not tell it was a coin or a special package. I prefer that as it keeps people from stealing things when they stick out of my mailbox. I paid for shipping and am happy my coin arrived safe and sound. As for Stone you are right he is a great asset to this forum and has never done me wron. As for his post it was a lapse of judgement to post it as what transpired was inevitable. As for ebay I do my thing I do it right and get discounts for doing so but I do not bow down to them I use them they use me, that is how it works....

Honestly, I have pretty thick skin here. I found out from that post that my perspective wasn't as universally accepted as I initially anticipated and it was great to get a dose of reality from other members here.

While I appreciate the apology I don't feel it was entirely necessary. I ended up enjoying my beer image and am on a great vacation right now. Fresh eyes are favorably anticipated along with some sun and relocations.

$.99 Auctions usually have a minimum amount of shipping to ensure a minimum recovery of cost.

I have never been offered as much money on a coin by a local dealer as I have made selling one on ebay even after all fees and shipping, so ebay makes me more money when I sell something that so sucks lol

As a buyer I don't care about insurance and would never pay for it. Insurance protects the seller. The risk is on him.

I buy quality bubble mailers in bulk, I can get them easily at $.17 to .25 each. I took pride in safely packaging my items. No reason any Ebay seller cant do the same.

I also had free shipping on nearly all items with few exceptions for large bulking things.

I miss having my own eBay store at times.

Geez, are we at a point where you owe someone an apology for disagreeing with them? I disagree with
friends all the time. It's healthy and normal.

I gave my thoughts in the shipping thread, and stand by them. Stone is under no obligation to pay the
slightest attention to what I wrote. For the record, Stone is one of my favorite posters on the board:
a very nice guy who treats everyone with respect.

I was just chastised and told to read rule #3 for making this joke " MGLICKER you must like daytime soaps because you just don't stop the drama, give it a rest" and I do not want to loose my membership to this forum as I was told retribution will be fast for this violation. I there fore offer my most heartfelt apology to MGLICKER for insinuating that he likes being involved in drama and that he likes daytime dram shows. I did not realize he would take such offense to this comment as much worse has been said to him and about him by others. I hope all of your reprimands were not so forceful as mine was, again please MGLICKER accept my apology and don't turn me in for making such a harmful joke.

This "factor" only applies to Buy It Now's.

BTW, I charge for shipping since not everything I sell is a guaranteed winner and I have to pay for the proper packaging of that which I sell which ain't cheap.

I don't think the posters in the other thread were being honest with themselves since its easier to criticize someone else than to understand what you were saying.

The seller deserved a ding on his "shipping and handling" so that other folks that bid on his listing might understand that even though they'll pay $5.25 for shipping, they won't get $5.25 worth of shipping. They'll get .95 cents worth of shipping.

How do YOU know what they will get, or even what they will be ok with? If the shipping charge is known, upfront, prior to bidding, and they are ok with it, then to each their own, right? Unless you are the seller, or have talked to him, how do you know that each thing is packed the same way with the same materials?

The thing about these boards is everyone WANTS to have their opinion and have others agree with it. It won't happen. No one knows everything nor what others are thinking. Keeping an open mind to the point of realizing that one doesn't know what others are thinking is key....but that can't be forced either.

Ultimately, the issue was between Stone and the seller.....to bring other "future buyers" into it and use that as an excuse (and, note, Stone is not the one saying that) for the ding, is, imho, moronic and stretching to just add something to something that shouldn't even have been brought up as an issue...since, imho, it really isn't an issue.

But, hey, to each their own and it just shows how some folks are always about the negative......
