If Google Buys Ebay for Paypal....how will this effect us...

So the behind the scenes rumors that are flying in the computer world are that Google may just buy Ebay because they want to have Paypal because that is the weak link and they need that part of the puzzle ....

I wonder how that effects everyone if it happens?

Hard to say.

If Ebay is really just an afterthought, they may just turn it over to some care-takers to run. As long as it continues to make money, they may not see a reason to mess with it.

On the other hand, Google is known for innovative ideas...so maybe they actually have a plan for Ebay. Use the name recognition and user base to compete with Amazon? Less bidding, more fixed price??

(In short, I have no idea).

One thing for sure....The Ebay search engine would be fantastic!

More targeted ads and sales pitches. More tracking of your personal data as it won't just be browser history tracked now, but more easily able to be linked to your very personal information (real name, real address/PO box, real phone number, potentially bank account info, etc)

For all the super paranoid people that are on these forums, some of what Google will do, if that were to happen, will really shock them (of, some of them will continue with a blind eye because they really like Google)

Interesting stuff... I think it would actually make sense for google/paypal/ebay. That alliance could knock Amazon off of its virtual monopoly. Online auctions would probably disappear, would be great for Heritage. Many jobs would be lost on the eBay side. Customer service would improve and I think profits would too. Even with the brightest minds at work, integration would be a difficult to say the least.

Too late. Google knows more about you and I than our wives do.

Anything to change the bay, havent been there in years. Had a great run, left with thousands of 100 % feedbacks as a seller. They just kept tightening the screws until I said goodbye. Nobody gets 12% of my money.

Once Google could improve the singular value of feepay they would spin-off feepay as it's too labor intensive. That would be the same reason Yahoo closed their US auction site a few years ago. Both Google and Yahoo are advertising agencies first and foremost. Icahn was probably looking to set up PayPal to be taken over by Google recently.

Oh, and how will it affect us? It will open up the market for multiple credit processors to service seller accounts and reduce back end costs for those sellers.

Maybe you, Jack, but pretty sure they know minimal about me

I know most of what they do and seldom, if ever, use Google in any form, because of what they do with the tracking and information.

I believe you may be indirectly referring to an RW Baird write-up that said a strategic alliance expansion would makes sense but is unlikely. Just speculation on a lazy day in May.

Tough to tell. I think they would shed a lot of the unnecessary overhead which would mean less intrusion. That wb great.

It gets me ebay makes money from me, I have 100% positive feedback, always pay my billings from them on time and then want to insult me with their corporate minions and their performance nitpicking.

This is all based off of a research report from an equity firm hypothesizing that a merger would be good for both companies. I have yet to see any firm, analyst or even internet-rumor-fanboy-whackadoos floating anything that directly or indirectly indicates the two companies have even remotely considered such a merger/acquisition.

That said, Google is a personal informational brokerage and marketing company at heart. So, considering they are gathering as much information about you as they can through web browsing, apps, email and more – my concern would be having them add my financial transactions data to the pool of data they already have on me.

I bought eBay specifically because it owned PP. Assuming this actually happens (which I kind of doubt) I'd probably keep the GOOG stock after the transfer.

I think Google is way too big as it sits now and not quite sure the Government would allow the acquisition of eBay!
However when is comes to monopolies we all know that Microsoft was truly never split up like they said it would be.

one thing google does is things well. IF they bought Ebay it would certainly be improved for the most part. Now they may end up spinning if off, but you bet they would increase it's value first.
