Many of the P and S dates post 1876 are generic in and up to mid MS with a few exceptions (1881-1885 P $2.5's for example). Cannot comment on the price per oz as I haven't researched them in that context. I would think that $20's and $10's are the most efficient means of acquiring gold with a numismatic component.

On eBay common $5's appear to be selling at an 8 to 10 percent premium per ounce over $10's and $20's.

Yes, there are many generic quarter and half eagles. Examples include quarter eagles from 1901-1907 and numerous half eagle dates post 1880 or so. If you are looking to invest/speculate in gold, buying generic double eagles is generally more efficient as the premium per ounce of gold is smaller.

You've read between the lines as best as 1 post can be read.

I've been considering buying some "other." I have been considering some gold nuggets even.

Price will be the limitation that keeps me from getting into $10 and $20.

I've got other things on the list, so if the price is right, it'll be first-found-first-bought.

A couple of IH QE and a couple Coronet might be good unless I can get 4 IH cheaper....

Who are the go to people for these QE widgets?

Modern post-1982 $5 and $10 gold commems can sometimes be obtained around spot.

A generic gold coin to me means a common date coin within a specific series. Many common date gold coins sell well above melt if they are high enough grade. As an example, a generic $3 gold coin will be dated 1854, 1874, or 1878 and will be worth well above melt value unless it is severely damaged. Another example is the Type 2 gold dollar with the 1854 or 1855 being the generic type for the series. A quick glance at any price guide (Red Book, Coin Dealer Newsletter, etc) will tell you which dates are the generic coins within a specific series.

All gold denominations have generic dates, including quarter and half eagles.

The MS64 common date $2-1/2 Libs for example (1899-1908) cost under $700 each. While you don't get all that much gold for your money ($157 in spot value), the coins are probably 12X rarer than a MS64 Saint, and in fact scarcer than MS64 $2-1/2 Indians, $10 Indians, $20 Libs, and $20 Saints. An MS64 $2-1/2 Lib is 2X as scarce as a MS66 Saint. Generic basically means they can trade sight-unseen over the phone as long as they are slabbed with a grade. There are plenty to go around. The $20's give you the best bang for the buck in net gold weight. Generic MS63-65 gold in the lower denominations ($1-$10) are now generally at 8 year lows....despite gold being nearly 2X the price it was back in 2006.
