Is there any one Civil War Token collection widely considered to be the finest extant?

I think he meant the extent of the extant collection.

In my opinion -- if you're thinking "best ever, past or present" -- I would vote for that of the late Steve Tanenbaum. I was very happy to add a piece with his provenance to my small collection. The guy was a walking encyclopedia of patriotic, store-card, and other types of tokens from that era.

I knew of Steve Tanenbaum and would have loved to have seen his collection.

I would have suggested QDB as well but I don't know what he has vs what he's handled/sold.

Bowers purchased a goodly portion of Steve Tanenbaum's collection
after he passed away, adding considerably to his own already
    considerable collection.

This may be a bit off the topic but there seems to be some similarity here with the market situation in So-Called Dollars.

Back in the 1980's I collected both Civil War tokens, mostly patriotics, and So-Called Dollars. The material available was very unspectacular. Mint state or rare pieces were seldom seen. Then came the 2000s. Suddenly it seemed the market was filled with high grade and rare material, much of it from collections that had been formed in the 1950s and 1960s. The collectors of that earlier era were passing from the scene and their collections were coming to market. Now we seem to be past the peak and choice items are again becoming hard to find ... because there never were many of them anyway.
    All glory is fleeting.

Well, if the recent fixed price list from QDB is dups and extra's, then he really does have a fantastic collection! image

Cindy Wibker, who was once Cindy Grellman, had a really nice collection that totaled 5,500 varieties. Cindy is now one of the top officials in the FUN organization. Her collection was close to half of the known varieties. She consigned her collection to Steve Tannenbaum who in turn sold or consigned a good number of the pieces to me. There a lot of wonderful Mint State Brown and R&B tokens in her collection, and I was fortunate enough to be able to keep some of them.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Bill - It sounds as though you have a respectable collection of your own.
