GC vs eBay sales update

I posted a while back about whether I should list my coins on eBay or Great Collections. I have a 100% eBay reputation with around 500 feedback. But I hadn't eBayed in over a year and I wanted to see if GC would be worth the lesser hassle. So I did a trial run. I sent some 2011 Eagle PCGS FS coins to GC and posted some up for direct auction on eBay. Here are the results:

$1 Eagle Rev Proof, PR69 FS - $356 (eBay)
$1 Eagle Rev Proof, PR69 FS - $240 (GC)
$1 Eagle-S, MS69 FS - $217.5 (eBay)
$1 Eagle-S, MS69 FS - $155 (GC)
$1 Eagle-W, PR70DCAM FS - $127.5 (eBay)
$1 Eagle-W, PR70DCAM FS - $115.11 (GC)

The more expensive the coin, the better it did on eBay. Yes it's a small sample size. But probably enough of a delta between the two companies to keep me selling on eBay. For now.

The Ebay market appears to be ahead of the curve on some of the Eagles.

The 2011 Reverse proofs have been selling for between $250 and $350 on Ebay in Pr69. Auction norm is about $280 so you did quite well at $356.

I would think that on Morgans, GC would have a bit of a priced realized edge.

Different venues for different material.

I would never think of GC for the cheaper/generic stuff. I might be wrong but I think GC is really the
collector's go to for better material. Ebay will always be best for the common, bullion, cheap, or
such material.

At least that's the way I see it.

eBay net out = 344.75
GC net out = 205.91

thank you for the post its helpful to see some real world results.

GC is still new and getting established I would think there are examples where prices realized were on par or better then the bay.
GC has a great platform and selling style in my view , and I expect them to be a major player in the niche they are/have carved out.

Hopefully others will chime in with some actual results like the OP has done it is helpful to see such information.

I've never seen a GC horror thread like the ones that permeate this board day in and day out on these boards. For anything but generics I would choose GC.

It's all about eyeballs I guess. eBay still has plenty of those.

There is nothing wrong with stating his experience at all. I am not sure who made you Sheriff lately, but I certainly do not recognize your authority.

Almost all threads praise GC and I expect to soon be a consignor.

A blip on the screen happens on occasion and this is an example.

Too small of a sample size I think. But also remember with GC you do no work other than turning over your coins and receiving a fast check.

I have sold a few through GC and a couple I thought went really cheap and I though I could have done better on eBay, while others surprised me and sold for more than I expected... that's how it works pretty much everywhere you sell if it's a true auction.

I believe that he is referring to the constant stream of horror stories about eBay. If there was one here about GC, there would be 1,001 and about eBay.

I never said there was something wrong with him stating his experience. Only implied that the horror stories of eBay make GC seem like a fitting alternative.

In my experience, the more numismatic coins sell for more on GC. I have stopped selling coins on eBay.

Your GC numbers do not incorporate BP. For example, on the RP, the high bid was $240, but the final price was actually $264. I presume that is also the case for your other two GC prices. Certain venues are better for certain coins, and eBay may be a better venue for these coins, but the price data in your post is not exactly an apples to apples comparison. Thanks for sharing nonetheless!

Edit: I'm assuming this is the RP on GC.

We are pleased with recent consignments to Great Collections. For us the net amount we receive at Great Collections is on par or downright better than what we receive via Ebay for similar coins.

Coincidentally, we are sending another consignment of roughly 20 coins today.

To the OP, were the eBay coins also spotted? I just checked the 2011-S, which had spots (auction at GC). I think the Proof did as well.

But to agree with others, there are definitely coins each week that sell for more on GC, equal and less at GC compared to eBay. For every example of a coin selling for less, there are examples of coins selling for more. It's the nature of auctions. We're selling more and more each week ($550,000 last night, for example - and this week more than that) so we're offering coins for everyone.

And RYK, definitely no CDs. :-)

GC is a full service auction company so the comparison to Ebay seems off base, would be better compared to Heritage or Stacks. The next test should be calling Ebay and GC, then compare how long it takes to get to a live person at Ebay vs. GC. Remember you take the risk of an Ebay transaction going bad, while GC bears the risk on their auctions for both payment and delivery.

I have used GC for grading, ebay cant help there.

All coins can have isolated better sales on different venues, I would be more interested in a larger sample size across a broader base of coins. I think you wold see GC pull ahead.

Look at this in another way.. for a coin club member, I shopped 6 PCGS coins from Morgans.. Silver Comms.. Walking Libs..Barber. 65 , 66, 67s.. .. to 3 different dealers in Chicago area..they offered between $6900 to $7800 for the whole lot..So I put the coins in Great Collections....coins sold for total $12,400 after juice ...GC is great outlet for collectors who may not be on Ebay nor have the time for Ebay
For buyers ...better consistent Quality coins than the bay

Ian, thanks for the reply. My post is not to call out GC in anyway, just feedback for a cost benefit analysis from one customer. As to the your question, "were the eBay coins also spotted?," yes. I just checked the pictures on eBay and they all have spotting. I believe almost all of my 2011 Eagles have spotting.

I just scanned some Morgan closing prices. Most were right in line with eBay. It also looks like you better have a minimum starting price on your items. Is that the case for those who use this service?

There sure are some Sweet toners on there!!
