This came from the central states show - I think I overpaid a little for it but when I saw it I had to have it.

Nice error coin. All Merc errors are expensive.

IMO, I would call the error a struck thru.

It sorta hard to tell in the plastic - from what I can see of the reeding through the side of the slab I think it is almost full; so 25% seems about right.

I opined that perhaps a cresent shaped scrap of planchet got inbetween the die and the planchet and left the indent. I have a similar scrap piece in the SDB (unstruck) that looks similar in shape.

The fact that the reverse is perfectly normal is the best indicator that the obverse indent happened during the strike as opposed to post mint.
