Really bad fake. Struck from crudely hand engraved dies.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

You would become "judgmental" if you were get caught with one at full price or even at a discount below full price. Also many fakes were made in the early 1960s to fool collectors, not "back in the day." Most of the fakes are much better than the piece than the piece that started this thread.

As for the gold content if the thing is full weight you are looking at less than 1/20th of an ounce. There is not much melt value there. Counterfeit gold dollars have plagued this series for many years. In addition the small size of these coins, fears of getting stuck with a counterfeit have made the coins harder to sell.

i was appreciating it in the fact it isn't the junky counterfeit type but more "folky"? but after reading your post, despite having a few cotemp counters myself, you are right on the mark sir. they may be neat to look at now but they have pretty much done nothing but cause chaos which is why they were created to begin with. greed, fear and chaos.

very glad to see someone else take the hard line on these for a change. tyvm. image

i'm pleased to add it to my database to share with others tho.

You found one of the ones that inspired them to write the book. And enact the law.
