The real question is whether the different TPGs will have the same strike zone.

Will there be a "first strike" on these?

Is there a mercy rule on these puns? image

Am I correct to assume there will be a series?

I think a lot of the coins bought right from the mint will not cross the plate at a 70 but will be sliders. Also it looks like the TPG's will need to change up their slab designs to fit the coins.

Do hits in the right field count the same as hits in the left field?

No presales of the 70s yet by the major coin dealers. Being cautious, no one knows if the curvature will effect the grading.

This thread has me in stitches! I wonder if the mint is going to produce any errors in this series.

Will they make one in high relief?
  • FredWeinbergFredWeinberg Posts: 5,930 ✭✭✭✭✭
Actually, there is one very interesting
potential error that will probably occur
    on this series......

The gold and silver coins are (for discussion
    purposes) solid gold and silver.....These
planchets, when struck in the 'Curved'
process, these planchets should be just fine.

However, because the Half Dollar is a CLAD
coin, with three layers, I'm bettin' that there
should be some of those clad curved coins that
SPLIT apart due to the striking pressure, if
some of the planchets aren't 'bonded' properly
in the original strip of clad material.

Whether buyers will get any coins that are
already split, or if they will split apart years
    later, I can't tell you.....

And yes, we can, to keep this threat consistent,
call them "Split Fingered Planchet Fastballs"

Since the Captain started this thread, I observed that the US Mint and TPGs will both hit a home runs with these coins.

The US Mint will have a "money ball" with making and selling the coins.

TPGs will start a new E.R.A. of grading baseball shaped coins. What do you think the batting average of 70 graded coins will be?

If the reverse proves unpopular, the mint could retire the side and go to the bullpen for a design with better relief.
