Home U.S. Coin Forum

do any of you have a custom liscence plate proclaiming your coin hobby?

I was driving around town today in an undisclosed location OF California and saw a car with

a custom plate that read I "HEART SHAPE" COINS. I assume it was a coin collector or dealer, for
what else could it be, I wonder ?

If is was a dealer or collector, I think it would be somewhat idiotic and retarded to put it on your
car liscence plates. Maybe this is how so many people stop of for diner and then get the car broken into.

Do any of you out your coin hobby on your car like this?

I used to live in CA and saw a plate that said "Porn Star". It was a freaky dude in a pink Ford Escort (really crappy car). EVERYONE was laughing as he drove bye.

    I wouldn't think of it.
I'm a license plate collector and I've never gotten a plate that relates to numismatics.
    Would be cool.

This reminds me of Michael Jordan's dad's license plate that said "UNC0023". He was killed and the license plates were stolen.

Saw a license plate on the Ohio Turnpike near Cleveland (have a pic somewhere) that read "FRANKIE".

Somehow I figured that the guy probably didn't collect Franklins.

My old licence plate said FLY-IN1. I still have it, although it is on the wall in my office. I doubt anyone thought it had numismatic connotations.

"I (heart) Coins" can be interpreted in many different ways and to the typical non collecting layman it simply means they love money. Vanity plates don't concern me a fraction as much as the occasional car I see at a coin show parking lot with a decal on the side door or back window that advertises their coin and precious metals buying and selling business.

My AUANDAG plate is hanging in the garage. Had it for years and never had any inkling that anyone
would figure it out. Then some seedy looking characters, with a boom box that vibrated the car, pulled
up to me at a light, turned the sound down, and the front passenger asked how much gold and silver
    I had on me.

That got hung in the garage asap.

There was a well known local coin dealer here in Maine who always had the license plate "MS-70" on his bright red Porsche 911. It was kind of cool, but I always thought it to be a significant security risk. Better not to brag about your hobby or vocation when it carries such a risk.

I did have a vanity plate of 31337 for years when I did nothing but network security. Unfortunately ROOT and GOTROOT were both taken already.

These days I'd probably do something along the lines of...

CULL - For my beater/"haul stuff" car.
90 PCT - For my daily driver.
MS 70 - For my garage car.

Edited to add: Best one I ever saw was an orthapedist in one of my old neighborhoods that had "JOINTS" on his plate. Sadly, "the man" took it away from him.

Local vest-pocket dealer here drives a small pick-up truck and he has signs on both sides and the tailgate that say "BUY MY COINS" with his phone number and other things professing his vocation. I took a picture a few months ago. If I find it on my phone I will post it here. Absolutely insane.

When I worked for Jonathans Coins back in 1972,
his green station wagon, which he used for both
personal and business (p/u and del. silver bags, etc.)
had a License plate that read " 09-S VDB "

I always thought 'Great, why not put a sticker in

I have a friend who in college had a license which said, "IMZONED". For some reason he kept getting pulled over by the cops. image He eventually wised up and changed it.

Decades later, his license plate now says, "CONASUR".

This reminds me of those threads that appear just before Halloween where someone asks about passing out coins in holders to the trick-or-treaters. I point out that it isn't a good idea to let everyone in your neighborhood know that you collect coins since some of these kids may have older brothers with a drug habit. Usually, there were a few forum members that called me paranoid but I say why take the chance? I feel the same way about advertising that you are a coin collector on a vanity plate on your car---why take the chance?

Life is too short. I'm more comfortable in my skin believing that even the most sophisticated thief in my area has no clue what a 66FBL is, than worrying about maybe he does know. And even if he does know, he probably doesn't like Frankies anyway!

Besides, they aren't in my back seat, they are in the safe deposit box.

I actually do not think of the two as being one in the same.

I know the folks in my 'hood, and they know me. I have given out coins in classrooms when my kids were younger--low value and or obsolete coins like IHCs, buffalo nickels, new Zincolns and Jeff nickels, etc.

Driving around in a car with a license plate that id'ed me as a coin collector would be challenging. For one, it would be hard to come up with a concept, in 6 letters or fewer, that would identify you to the world as a coin collector.

    COINS
    COIN
    AU COIN
    etc

Most of the more clever ideas would pass unnoticed or unrecognizable to 99.9% of the population.

    09SVDB
    16D 10C
    55DDO

But the bigger issue is that I would not want to have to explain to people what my cutesie "DAUMAN" or DIRTAU" or "DGOLD" stood for and see the look in their eyes while they think that I really deserve a license plate with a very large "L" image
