Do toned gold eagles = SAEs with milkspots?

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,942 ✭✭✭✭✭
Is it some other reaction? Are they related? What would cause toning this dramatic for such a recent piece of bullion?

I really wonder if the machine operator or graders have a effect. I've had a couple of MS70's take on toning and they were straight to PCGS in mint capsules. Didn't really hurt the value that much but sure didn't make price guide when sold.image

Added mine was a 2007 Jefferson Liberty PCGS MS70, I sold it at auction with melt value as start.

I've sent a couple of my 70 (1) and 69 (1) coins in for review for odd orange toning on them (first spouse .9999)

I'm wondering the same myself as I've got spotting and weird toning problems like that on more than just those two. (didn't send them all in as these two went along for the ride and I wanted to see how they'd be dealt with before potentially spending $25 each on nothing)

I was shocked to see two more in my reholder submission with spots. I was concentrating on getting the submission info correct and perhaps missed them, but it seems the two are coming back to me as one is marked "shipped" today. I though they'd be held, pulled, and addressed before they left. (who you gonna call? 447-8848 busters)

    oh, ... forgot....

those eagles are 22k and I'm not surprised those tone.

The coloring is not unattractive on yours and I would not equate it with an ASE milk spot at all.

i hate to say this, but i think those era pcgs slabs do it. i bought a bunch of gold bullion in 07...a couple examples i had slabbed...all of which toned. the rest (un-slabbed) look like they did when i bought them. it could be just a coincidence, but i have seen others...i especially recall coinsarefun's example of an 08 i think.

    Recent?

That coin is close to 14 years old.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

  • Anyone know if PCGS will grade an ASE that has milk spots (raw) and if so what the max grade would be?

Err, I'm talking about the 2006 slabbed piece. It's ~8 years old, but it's been this color for at least the last 2 or 3 years.

Weiss, that's pretty nice toning, in the scheme of things.

I've had AGEs tone after being slabbed, in that 2007-2008 era. One of them was an 1989 1/2 oz AGE that I'd had for 17 years without having it tone. Once it was slabbed, it toned unevenly. I had it conserved, and now it has re-toned just a little and much more evenly.

I have a 2008-W Burnished 1/4 oz AGE that was kept in its sealed box for about a year before being submitted as First Strike. When I received it, it was pristine. Over the next couple years, it toned unevenly. I will be sending it in for conservation because I can't afford not to do it.

Do pure gold coins like Maple Leafs tone to that orange color?

Seems like it may be the slab, but more likely the insert. The best way to find out would be to use XPS/ESCA as a preferred method to analyze the coin's surface for contaminants. It should be nondestructive, esp. if one can find someone using a big enough sample holder to accommodate the whole coin.

My first spouse toned orange. They are 4 9's pure.

    The color is like Cheetos.

The really odd thing is that they turned in a few weeks, no joke.

Clarification- not unattractive - mine are splotchy but that eagle is 22k and evenly colored. One wonders if something is wrong with .9999 pure gold that discolors on both sides... And it's and uneven splotchiness of varying amount up to most of both sides.

I like AGEs with toning.. for some reason Jamestown Commem $5 gold peices toned like crazy. What's the difference between that and other years? No idea.

My two first spouses also have Cheetos toning on them.

This is par for the course after about 5-10 years. Coins tone over time. Slabbed coins you have to crack them and dip them if they are doggy looking. Raw coins in original USM packaging, no problem.

In my opinion ASE's with milk spots are always ugly.Spouses and buffaloes usually tone with negative eye appeal-red spots or blotchy toning. On the other hand I have a few AGE's that I purchased specifically for their attractive toning (peripheral orange toning and gold centers)

toning on gold is actually attractive in my eyes while milk spots are an eye sore
