Super nice set with no spots.

    Contains a note:
Dusty smudges on outside of packaging can be wiped off. This is not a reason to return the item.

The plastic uni-holder has a film sheet scratch protector.

  • I received my set on Mar. 12. Had same protective over over plastic. I took it off and plastic had a scuff mark and a couple of scratches. But, the coins were fine.

Anyone know what date the cutoff is for first strikes?

I don't see a cutoff date posted on their website yet.

I received my sets (2) on Friday and opened them today...I read about the scuffs on the plastic but I was not prepared for the low quality of the half and ASE...markes are definitely on the coins (except for some stray fibers). Some look like light reflections but they are not. Poor pics done with point and shoot hand held but I think they get the point across....not worth waiting 5 months or so for:

Not to be a nudge here but thanks to a poster on another forum I went to Ebay and checked out the pics of the 2013 sets for sale...and quite a few have the same marks/abrasions as my returned sets...same coins involved, same location, same appearance.

Mission Control....I think we have a problem here.

    This could get interesting....

So I'm guessing there is no first strike this year ?

I sure hope there is, 'cause I've already sent mine in...
There is no knowledge that is not power.

No mention about having to submit through the bulk department this time. Another reason why First Strikes will be much more plentiful for 2013 than for 2012.

  • I received my 2013 set last Saturday and all the coins are nice. No scratches or nicks.
  • I got mine yesterday and at first I was pretty disappointed as the plastic case had some pretty bad abrasions on it in places. After a closer examination, I noticed that the case comes apart. It's not sealed. The coins are encased in a flexible, plastic sheet and on mine, the hard, outer plastic case is what has the abrasions on it. I was able to separate the case halves, clean the inside of them with some good glass cleaner and a very soft terry cloth, rotate the coins 180 degrees to where they were and put it back together. That moved the abrasion areas over the paper insert so you can't even really see them now and they are away from the coins. It was easier to do this than send them back for an exchange. I hate doing exchanges with the mint but I have to with one set as there is a spot on the Mt. Rushmore quarter. PITA. image The quality of the coins really isn't anything impressive (far from actually) and the reverse of the SAE, Kennedy and Roosy, and the obverse of the quarters have a really strange looking, shiny matted finish. Can't get that to show up in a pic.

I found it easier to leave everything in place and just rotate the top plastic cover to where the scraps are not visible (after cleaning it of course)

A few 2013 First Strikes are starting to appear on eBay. Quality is hard to come by - of the 75 silver eagles from the Limited Edition set graded so far, only 2 are PR70 and a huge majority are 67 and 68.

I sent mine back. I'm not paying premium money for ugly.

I also noticed that that case scratches very easily, so anyone who does keep them should keep that in mind.

2013 Silver Eagles with the Limited Edition PR Set "First Strike" label already outnumber their 2012 counterparts by more than 4 to 1. And the 2013's have only been out for several weeks.

In 69 and 70 the 2013's outnumber the 2012's by more than 3 to 1.

IMO as the series progresses, the 2012 Silver Eagles from the set are going to remain the "First Strike" keys by a large margin. Only 9 have been graded PR70 and slightly over 100 exist in all grades. Apparently very few 2012 sets were sent in early for grading, and very few unopened eligible mint sealed mailing boxes were saved.
