I cherrypicked a Colonial today!

cmerlo1cmerlo1 Posts: 8,036 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was at the Temple, TX show today, looking through a dealer's US stock, and next to me was a book of foreign coins. This one was on the page that was open- I'm not sure why I even looked at it since I don't do foreign coins, but I did, and realized what it was. I got it for the price on the holder. It's a 1787 Connecticut- it must've spent a long time underground, but it is still cool. Anyone know what variety it is, or is it a contemporary counterfeit?

So you probably paid common GB halfpenny money, i.e., less than ten bucks? What, three, four, five bucks?

    If so, nice cherrypick!

I'm not up to speed on all the Connecticut copper types and varieties, but plenty of folks here are.

I cherrypicked one out of a bulk lot of foreign coins, once. 'Bout like that.

Wasn't worth a ton, but considering I paid a few cents for it and I think I got thirty or forty bucks for it as it was in rough shape, I didn't complain.

Actually, cmerlo1 deserves a double "YOU SUCK," since this is an R.5 variety. It is M.48-g.5. So, here you go: YOU DOUBLE SUCK!

    Congratulations on the great cherrypick!

Condition is an issue here, but I would guess in the $100 to $150 range (retail), but you would have to find a Connecticut collector who needs that variety.

    This one brought $250.

I would say the OP's coin might bring $25 - 50 on ebay.

In that condition $50-$100, my guess. Maybe more, but grading/pricing these at that level is a game.

    Still, a 50-100x ROI ain't too shabby.

Yea, you are probably closer to reality. Here's a decent example that realized $126 a few years ago: Heritage Auction

Nice $1 cherrypick! I am sure our founding fathers from Connecticut would be glad to know it is properly attributed now.

It's interesting how people's minds work here, member Whit helps discover a Machin's Mills piece, Vlack 13-87CT, 5 now known and does not get a "You Suck" award while someone pays a buck and gets one and no-one really knows what he's got.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

I thought Whit helped ID the coin, but it was owned by someone else and therefore he didn't buy it or stand to make a windfall. So not suck-worthy.

I must have missed it too.

"You Sucks" vary according to the circumstances and the whims of whoever happens to be giving one. No consistency to it, I'm afraid.
