Art vs. Clipart

ZoinsZoins Posts: 34,401 ✭✭✭✭✭
A number of people, including myself, have bemoaned some modern designs that are akin to computer generated clip art. Recently, I've run across a number of pieces from China's Shenyang Mint (which also mints standard Panda coins) that reminds me of art, like what we used to do in the US in the 19th century was artistic. It would be great if could attain a level of artistry in our coins / medals again.

I'd love it of the CCAC or some other group could infuse more artistry and higher relief into our coins and medals.

Both of these are from 2013.

Interesting designs and do like the high relief. Not sure how practical they would be for coins. Medals and icons are easier to come across as works of art.

Very nice, but I am afraid art will not be a part of U.S. coinage as long as the designs are left to committee's....Cheers, RickO
  • What is the silver coin/ medal called?

The top one is Wutai Mountain or 五台山 according to Wikipedia.

The bottom one is China Aerospace Dream.

I was going to post a photo of recent US Mint products for comparison but there are so many that I don't think it's necessary. It's kind of unfortunate, but there are a few stand outs like the UHR and AGBs.

Some coins are better than others like the UHR and AGBs.

I've been saying that we should have a bigger split between NCLT and CLT. I don't see any reason why NCLT can't be higher relief, even for things that have CLT counterparts, like our proof sets. I think it would be nice to have HR proof sets.

Many recent pieces look like they need more engraving artistry. I've been thinking the US Mint should hire Heidi Wastweet for a few pieces and reinstill that kind of artistry in our coins.

I think they are awesome and interesting designs. Don't think they would work for coinage though. Too many machines that accept coins would be one of the downfalls due to reprogramming.

I'm with you Zoins although I won't hold my breath for art such as this.

I think this is more appropriate for NCLT (think UHR) and medals as mentioned. I'd like to think we can get beyond spaghetti hair for CLT (circulation legal tender) so I'm holding out some hope for CLT as well.
  • I like those. They have the look of carved pieces ... hobo yen?
Let's try not to get upset.

I like the look a lot but they are probably not hand carved. There are currently two eBay sellers each with two of the first piece for sale. They come in Mint boxes with COAs.

I hope we're not falling behind other Mints, much less our own selves. Even the Mint medals from the 19th century look much more artistic than those of the 20th and 21st centuries.
