<< <i>Dear Keylargo, what do you believe caused the toning of all the coins that you are selling? Thank you, RO >>
Well numerous coins I have sold have all passed the pcgs sniffer so lets not jumble one thing to the next. Would you like some true views of before and after of coins of mine that everyone said the same crap and yet they all made it passed the sniffer? As far as the rattlers who the hell knows I just bought the damn things saturday. The other sets I have had for close to five years now and have already been discussed on here numerous times >>
What about the mercury dimes in rattlers that you sold recently? They seem to have similar toning patterns to the two dollars you have currently listed.
<< <i>Sniffer is only used on secure plus or very expense coins with questionable toning. >>
I believe that to be close, but not entirely correct. I believe that DW, or someone else who is part of PCGS, has stated that it is also used if they feel the toning is questionable anyway. Does NOT have to be an expensive coin. They can use it at their own whim, and, I agree with that method of thinking....."when in doubt, sniff it out" Note: It has also been noted that the sniffer does not find everything....particularly if what caused the toning is now gone....
<< <i>......Ngc used to add a W or T to say whether the coin was white or toned when graded. Perhaps for this reason. >>
They did? >>
Yes...for a short period of time, they holdered silver coins with W(hite) or T(oned). Somewhat arbitrary at times, imho, but it was there. Always fun finding a W that is now T.

Both were listed the same day as the two peace dollar and Morgan and both were purchased Saturday as well however one merc is clearly an old album toner and NT as the day is long and the other looks more like an envelope toner and again Imo NT all day everyday. This thread is full of assumptions and accusations based off a chappy image, as much as I like do discuss toned coins this has become a personal attack on myself that I did absolutely nothing to deserve, I purchased some coins Saturday, listed them and all of a sudden I'm a coin doctor, quite interesting but I'll no longer be apart of the conversation
GSA did not issue the IKEs. The US Mint issued the IKEs in those packages.
KLRC, I do not think anyone here has accused you of being a coin doctor. People were simply inquiring about the origins of the coins, and what you specifically felt the origin of the toning was. I think you took it to heart and too personally. Have a good night and tomorrow is another day. Move forward and forget about it.

Cool beans. I don't know if I've ever seen one of those labels....or if it was on a Roos dime and wrongly assumed that they were referring to the torch.
Hey, it "could" very well be true Key Largo does not KNOW how they both were...uh...came to be. I would be more interested to hear his thoughts on likely causative factors for this toning pattern, and what are the most likely causes of stereo toning on two coins from different submissions.

I saw an NGC 67 T quarter at the Lakeland show last Friday....with the coin obviously and nicely toned. I asked the dealer about it, as I was only familiar with the * designation. He said it was something they did a long time ago on coins that were toned. But it was not an old holder, as far as I could tell - looked like the style used just prior to converting to the current prong holders.
while the prevailing opinion seems to be AT the two coins have the look of Enviromental Damage to me. since the holder is susceptible to leakage and "gassing" isn't it just as likely to have toned from storage in a high humidity/high heat attic or basement?? we had a guy come into the store this afternoon with about 10 Lincoln Cent Whitman folders that he received when his Grandfather died 20 years ago, long forgotten and recently rediscovered in his basement. each Set looked identical with the Steel Cents each rusted in the same fashion and the 1944-1945 coins toned similarly. the rest were mostly red.
my point is simply that coins stored together in the same way will tend to tone/damage in the same way.

It's this hope or hypothetical conjecture that allows people to pass off crap with a back story as possibly real. It takes equal parts imagination and blind faith to buy some of this stuff. It takes a similar amount of nativity to believe that Keylargo isn't more connected to the coins than he is letting on. Even if he isn't complicit in their creation, I am not sure what a "value add" his dealer services are adding by selling coins like that and then using the "I am just flipping them" excuse like its a Stella or something.

Quite the jump crypto, all off a sudden going to a coin show and listing new purchases for auction a couple days later is an excuse? Last time I checked every dealer at every major show does this but its some how an excuse? There is nothing I can do about the two dollars in rattlers as I purchased them saturday as far as the rest of my coins I have plenty of information regaurding them including numerous grades at pcgs via the sniffer. Now if the sniffer from pcgs is not enough to prove something than there is nothing I can do about anything. If you are so certian crypto then put your money where that big mouth of yours is, 5k in a fund and I will pull that peace dollar right now and over night it to pcgs, I will do a 1 day turn around pcgs secure and when it grades I get your 5k period. You want to throw out so much info based from an image its hilarious. The peace dollar has so much dip residue on the coin its unbelievable, you can see it from a mile away and thats what caused the toning. Ive had several proof walkers with similar issues. Do colorful peace dollars sell for big money of course, does pcgs grade dipped coins, all the time, what do you think the spots and streaks are from on the coin? its the dip residue as someone tried to wipe it off. Now your so confident in your accusations then again put your money where that big mouth of yours is and I will pull that listing right this second and send it secure first thing in the morning. Pcgs grades dipped retoned coins all the time and often times crazy toning is the result of dip residue so again put up or shut up

There are tons of dealers who sell all manner of coins you would find substandard. Are you going to start threads about all of them, as well? When you put up coins on eBay for auction, it's not like you're acting as a trusted advisor to a client who is paying a premium for you to select coins for them.
"The peace dollar and the morgan rattler I dont know, I know I just purchased them saturday- I do not know the history on those two coins so my guess would be as good as yours."

Nothing changed, I just get tired of trying to justify toning to someone when they already made up there mind, do I want to sit here and explain to a group of people attacking me about how a coin toned? No I dont really want to deal with that but when people start calling me a coin doctor or saying I did something to a coin it gets under my skin, I will post a thread in a moment and show close ups and better images of the coin to show how and what I think caused the toning.
Coins are AT all day what should it matter how and where KLRC got them, he should disclose the fact they are substandard and not monster toners. As even as his dip residue statement would suggest.
Nothing interesting about it, its simply how the coin toned but I hate having to over and over explain toning to people that attack me. Attacked for what, purchasing a couple coins and listing them on the bay after a local show get real, my apologies if every time I list a coin for sale I dont rush to the boards and try to justify the coin.
...ok im'a bout to be honest right now while dummy (dummy means I've had a few)...first off, I love the wager given by KLRC, as I have gambled since I could remember...I learned how to shoot dice before I leaned my ABC's second off, KLRC...you could have saved a lot of drama by just explaining how you thought the coins monster-toned in their original holders. Third off, if you know that the coin has toned from excessive dip-residue and then was wiped...how in the heck do you have the 5 racks (worth of knowledge & confidence) to bet that PCGS would not "genuine details" a coin in which your expertise knows had been wiped and then set to re-tone in a PCGS holder for 20+ years.
...I get it, you didn't make that coin the way it is...but to wager that it would automatically re-grade, submitted raw to our host in 2014, and after it has been exposed and made a public event on the CU forums...is a risky wager IMO.
...with all do respect Crypto...I would take that Action

While I appreciate your input I have no issues knowing that pcgs will grade the coin again. The sniffer detects something on the coin such as a chemical residue, foreign matter and so on, there is nothing left on the coin any more as all that dip residue is most likely long gone and whats left is this ugly peace dollar. I have sent in numerous coins via pcgs over the last 15 years or so and watched there grading standards change and change, now with the sniffer I am no longer left at the whim of some grader and looking at enough coins I am sure it will grade and I would love crypto to finally for once put his money where is so called expertise are

Keywords and descriptive, if non-technical, terms are two things...one is something you don't bandy about IMO if you want to be taken seriously for any sustained period. Everything can't be a monster just like everything is not "rare". I stay away from "rare" auctions.

This is why I say nothing at all to begin with, it goes from one debate to another to another to another. I always use the term monster on ebay as a keyword if the coin has colorful toning. Teletrade used to use the word rainbow if a coin had three colors and toned if not, there were numerous coins that were clearly what one would call rainbow that wouldnt get labeled as such and would go for less money due to teletrades descriptions. My goal on ebay is to attract as many buys as possible and I do it by using keywords such as MONSTER, COLORFUL, TONED, TONING, I see nothing wrong with that and will continue to do so.

Certainly your call. Were it me, I would not employ words that are just being used simply for effect. Toned and Toner are one thing, but Monster...the implication of the above paragraph, to me, could be that the terms are being used to increase bids. What of accuracy? Is this a monster? Would you use the word in a face to face transaction with folks in here? You said "buys", not "buyers". Public Image is more than Johnny Lyden's band. Keep the buyers happy long term, straight-shootin', and the buys will be there, that is my model.

My goal on ebay is to attract as many buys as possible and I do it by using keywords such as MONSTER, COLORFUL, TONED, TONING, I see nothing wrong with that and will continue to do so. >>
......and, this is the main problem. You are quite emotional on it and, instead of remaining calm and just ignoring certain things, you go out of your way to justify things. That is usually a losing situation. Very bad choice, imho, to try to justify by using Teletrade's use of "Rainbow" as an example. Many of us, myself included, looked down on TT with their poor usage of the terminology as it pertained to toned coins. To that end, you may entice some views and some newbies with "monster toner", when it is just a toned coin, you end up getting in situations such as this and alienating a potential group of slightly more educated collectors.
It doesn't do any good to thrash about with folks in a thread as it gets heated. Best to let some things lie, or to just shut up and ignore people. Just a bit of unsolicited advice, not even worth the face value of your icon.
<< <i>I find it interesting that there's nothing on the label to say the coin was either a blast white or heavily toned coin. Only a number that may say it was graded accordingly to the amount of marks, perhaps the amount of detail or luster. And what about the toning? How much was there? We will never know, will we, on what merits the coin received a MS63 grade. Now Ngc used to add a W or T to say whether the coin was white or toned when graded. Perhaps for this reason. >>
NGC never had a rattler holder that was / is very vulnerable to gaseous compounds that can cause accelerated toning on silver and copper coins while encapsulated. Where have you been for the last 5 or so years ? >>
And some gaseous tests were done awhile back on a number of holders, can't find any info on that for the moment but while some holders fared better than others, they all failed to some degree.
Perhaps you have some knowledge as to why Ngc implemented the T's and W's and stars and pluses or whatever to their labels.

They can use it at their own whim, and, I agree with that method of thinking....."when in doubt, sniff it out"
Note: It has also been noted that the sniffer does not find everything....particularly if what caused the toning is now gone....
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Yes...for a short period of time, they holdered silver coins with W(hite) or T(oned). Somewhat arbitrary at times, imho, but it was there.

KLRC, I do not think anyone here has accused you of being a coin doctor. People were simply inquiring about the origins of the coins, and what you specifically felt the origin of the toning was. I think you took it to heart and too personally. Have a good night and tomorrow is another day. Move forward and forget about it.

I saw an NGC 67 T quarter at the Lakeland show last Friday....with the coin obviously and nicely toned. I asked the dealer about it, as I was only familiar with the * designation. He said it was something they did a long time ago on coins that were toned. But it was not an old holder, as far as I could tell - looked like the style used just prior to converting to the current prong holders.

my point is simply that coins stored together in the same way will tend to tone/damage in the same way.

There are tons of dealers who sell all manner of coins you would find substandard. Are you going to start
threads about all of them, as well? When you put up coins on eBay for auction, it's not like you're acting
as a trusted advisor to a client who is paying a premium for you to select coins for them.

I use monster toner as a key word as it gets attention, I expect people to do there own due diligence when purchasing coins and on ebay I offer a full refund if not happy for any reason so yes I dont find anything wrong with using a key word on ebay to get more views and that peace dollar is closing in on over 600 in less than a day >>

Pcgs grades dipped retoned coins all the time and often times crazy toning is the result of dip residue so again put up or shut up >>

Keep the buyers happy long term, straight-shootin', and the buys will be there, that is my model.

......and, this is the main problem.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Where have you been for the last 5 or so years ?
tDo coins continue to tone in slabbed holders?
And some gaseous tests were done awhile back on a number of holders, can't find any info on that for the moment but while some holders fared better than others, they all failed to some degree.
Perhaps you have some knowledge as to why Ngc implemented the T's and W's and stars and pluses or whatever to their labels.

I have sent in numerous coins via pcgs over the last 15 years or so and watched there grading standards change and change, now with the sniffer I am no longer left at the whim of some grader and looking at enough coins I am sure it will grade and I would love crypto to finally for once put his money where is so called expertise are >>
Hey Soty27 errr Keylargo, That is actually some action I would be interested in but as a matter of principal I don't wager with people with a track record of being a deadbeat, if you make boosibri and Michiganboy whole and prove you have those types of funds we can talk.
Edited to add: that is the worse gassing job I have ever seen! Burned a little to much sulfer getting that one to tone lmao!
I was curious to see how it faired in comparison with this Peace dollar in its closing price.
