Bidask Fun show report......
It's always tough this time of year to pick between FUN and the NYINC as I am a darksider as well and the shows fall around the same time.
I was bidding on coins in the Heritage auction at both venues and had seen lots in hand with my recent trip to Dallas at the end of December but going to coin shows in person is always fun and a respite from the work world.
The decision was made when my wife said she would go to Disney so we flew in to FUN January 8th and booked a stay at the Embassy Suites thru January 12th. Only called the office once and checked my hand held a couple times a day so this was a real vacation for me for the 4 days I was in Florida.
I made it in time for the 4pm earlybird on the 8th and glad I did. I got around to half the bourse and said hello to several dealers I have known over the years including Kenny Goldman, Bob Higgins ( his company has a new name called Argent) , LS at Legend who showed me the dynamite ngc cac 65 1796 2 1/2gold...,the surfaces were superb), Kevin Lipton (who showed me the crossed Newman ngc 1840 reverse of 38' 50cent in ngc 65 to pcgs he had made) and stopped by Bill Shamhart's table and made personal acquaintance with Tom Bush, a real gentleman
and a guy I would trust. Tony Terranova told me the coin market has been slow the last year......
Lots of darkside dealers at FUN who I thought would be in NY. Aaron Lancaster, Civitas, , WINGS, and many others.
Seems like a lot of dealer to dealer activity.....dealer buying at auctions, but I would like to see more retail customers like me.
Every dealer has their own markets and their own buying and selling experiences...but there is no substitute for real customers imo.
There were a ton of Florida dealers there and of course a ton of morgans , ms 62-63 common gold, etc and lots of unoriginal surfaces coins.
But I noted business was being done at all levels of the coin market if the coins were priced right.
Plenty of business for lower graded coins of all kinds......of course it is a hobby!
Sold generic ms 65-66 morgans to Steinmetz and some ms 65 1935 Canadian dollars. I did not bring much with me and did no serious selling. I am trying to really be controlled in my spending on coins and unload coins that have no more meaning for me.....
Also sold an XF 40 1841 dollar and xf 45 1859 0 dollar to a dollar specialist, Don Rinkor....both pcgs. Both were nice. I had bought those at the local B&M to flip at FUN.
I will continue to do that. I tried to sell a vf 35 ogh1840 reverse of 39' seated half to a dealer who I thought would buy it. I quoted $150. He looked at it and checked grey sheet and said he would have to sell it for 200-225 ( im thinking that's a decent markup) but he passed. Admittedly that coin
like others is dirt cheap in the grey sheet...( find one for that price) ....I promptly sold it to another type coin dealer ...
One thing I was looking for were earlier dated seated dollars in 58 with original skin. I did look in every case cause you never what you might find. Case in point........in themiddle section next to Ken Ferguson I found an NGC 58 1840 dollar, a real beauty......these coins are very hard to find in auctions or the bourse. I asked the price and paid him immediately. Reflective surfaces with original toning.....loved it.
That night I took some former Boeing executives ( one a client of mine) and their wives out to dinner at Benihanna's.....great meal. Tried to get them to go to the show but they did not seem interested.
The next day Jan 9th, while the wife went to SeaWorld I spent the entire day on the bourse and went to the Platinum night too. There was a nice grouping of rare coins being shown at the upcoming Stack Platinum night in NYC. They also displayed a complete collection of bust dollars,
including most varieties, in pcgs slabs that is being offered for sale as a collection......many nice coins in high grades. They were asking $6.5 million for the set.
Legend was showing at their table some really nice coins at their upcoming Regency sale in February I viewed a couple I might be interested in.
Platinum nigh was interesting ( how could it not be with the brasher doubloon, 1913 nickel and 3 1792 dismes, and the 1884 proof 65 trade dollar....that was cool.)
The coins I enjoyed viewing the most were the 3 dollar gold from David Akers, especially the 1860, 1863, and 1867 all killer coins.
I thought about buying the 1860 but it would have been an impulse buy. I did buy a nice 1882 proof cameo 66 trade dollar which gives me 4 different dates in that grade. Heritage auctions are always a class act with good food too. All the top executives were there , Ivy, Halperin, Rohan, Imhoff. At their NYINC sale I bought the pcgs proof 66 cameo 1804 5 shillings and a gem pcgs 1820 Peru 8 reales. Really happy with those purchases. Can you believe the 1882 pcgs proof cameo 66 trade dollar I bought cost more than the 2 lots I bought at the NYINC combined?
Friday morning the wife blessed me with a few more hours at FUN before we took off for Disney world the next 2 days.
Can you believe I still had not completed seeing the whole bourse so from 9 -12 I spent walking the rest of the bourse and talking about the future of rare coins with LS. She said I did not have what it takes as a collector to hold long term.....and when it came to proof gold she was right....I had acquired about 6 or seven nice pieces but sold within a couple years.......but at least I reinvested in the DOW JONES at 11,300.
I also encouraged her to continue to speak her mind regards improving PNG member ethics,
In combing the rest of the bourse I found a really nice 1741 8 escudos with rose patina in a ngc 58 slab and it was all there. Bought it.
Also found a raw 1781, 1773, and 1815 2 reales........all unc-ish !
Neat finds if your a coin collector !

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
You hit several areas of satisfaction, looked at great coins, bought a great coin, sold some stuff, bought some cool dark side to scratch the itch. Last but not least, met up with some great friends.
I love the quartet of THREE'S from the Akers sale. I liked the 1863, one of my fav dates. All of those threes had amazing color and originality. You should have bought the 1860, thats a coin to stretch for and keep! I bet a couple of those three's will be messed with and in 68 holders. IMHO.
Any pics?
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.
edited to add: In 1989, I took the 1867 $3 from Mike Kliman at $135,000 and flipped it to Archimedes for maybe $10,000 more. And he flipped it to DWA for ???. Dave kept his coins for quality, not cost. I thought that an outstanding deal from the auction was Dave's 1831 25c PR66CAM PCGS,CAC. I remember it from 1978 or so. I think his T1 G$1 if from a Stacks sale in the mid-80's. The 1864 was very likely from the Brand hoard.
