1995-W Silver Eagle Conservation & Grading... Your Thoughts?

I had been posting on another forum the saga of my 1995-W Silver Eagle. Our hosts had graded it PF-67 several years ago... the coin had some haze & a spot on it. I sent it in for conservation & regrading at the other place and it's on its way back to me in a PF69 holder. Yeah, the value has increased substantially, but what about it? Do you have any strong feelings either way on how things shook out? Obviously I'm happy to get the nice 2-point bump.... but it's the same exact coin. What are your thoughts???

issues plaguing coin are cured, good and grading is subjective and varies by the hour.

I would say it is the same coin but (as women who have cosmetic surgery say) it has had 'work' done....so, same coin, different cosmetics....and, after all, cosmetics are what grading is based upon..... pretty coin, good grade....Cheers, RickO

Not sure the value has gone up as much as the fee was. No problem with the new grade.

Improper storage causes all sorts of problems. Some problems are worse than others. My feelings get in the way of the facts, and a coin in good preservation is better than one in need of good conservation and that's all there is to it.

In the print around here it says a 2 point variance is acceptable and not indicative of a grading "issue" etc.

How long does the conservation last? I have had sent coins for spot review and they have come back fixed, but the problem comes back 1-2 year later. But don't know if that is the case for all conserved coins.

Each example will be specific and different...
What was done, and with what/how, is not revealed and there is no guarantee, so I don't think an answer to your question is going to be forthcoming, apart from individual observations from members and that info has so many variables I doubt you could extract many conclusions from it.

I have also found that spots on modern gold and silver often recur after conservation.

We have some tendency to add points to our own coins, but my uncle had an original '95W gold proof set with the silver - I pulled the later out and on inspection looked perfect with no blemishes, oxidation or even pinpoint luster loss. This was borne out on 30x dissecting scope examination, so submitted it on the small chance of a "70". Just like everybody else came back PCGS 69DCAM. I really would like to blind study put this up to matching a known 70 and see where the extra 80k in value is for the 70.

Not sour grapes though, just a note that the premiums for the later on later coinage, and the ridiculous premium for "First Strike" are there for the moment but wonder if they can last...
