1892 Buffalo Bill's Wild West Company – Obverse 38mm Diameter Medal Die Adjustment Trial Strike

Without a doubt one of the coolest exonumia items I've ever had the opportunity to purchase.

A unique test strike struck on a thick over sized brass planchet for a 1892 prize medal for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Company.

William Fredrick Cody had commissioned London die-sinkers Baddeley & Reynolds to design this medal during one of his overseas tours with Annie Oakley when they performed for Queen Victoria.

It's a common date, but this particular piece is a close to flawless as any I've ever seen for the date/mm. I was thrilled to find it.

I have to admit that I have been very lucky this year as the economy has been very unfavorable
and I still was able to buy some very beautiful coins and tokens that were quite expensive.

But if I had to think very hard as to what brings a smile across my face every time I see it,I will have to pick this
advertising medal for Coke.

It is not by any means expensive, quite inexpensive actually. But
not so easy to find in near perfect condition with the original box.

I'd have to say this one. I was on the phone with Mark Feld when he picked it up to look at it for me. I don't remember exactly what he said but it was something like "Oooooooh, I like this! If you ever want to stretch for a coin this would be it." I've posted it before, but it still makes me smile.

Not a US coin, but my favorite purchase. This coin is one of six available to private collectors, with a handful more in museums. It was minted to commemorate the opening games at the Colosseum in 80AD and was handed out by the emperor Titus to key spectators. It's about the size of a half dollar but twice as thick.

Thanks! Six available means there are only six of this type which can be purchased - the other ~16 are in museums. There were certainly more minted originally (although they come from one die so the original population is quite limited) but these were loved in antiquity as much as they are now and therefore were quickly worn slick, then restruck into different types or used as base metal when later currency was debased significantly in Rome, hence the very low survival rate. While my example is just a Good VF, it's one of the finest. There are a few of a similar design which are in a fantastic state of preservation but they were struck several years later under Titus' successor Domitian, which misses on the historical tie-in of the inaugural games.

2013 was a good coin year. I stayed very focused and made some significant progress towards long term collecting goals. This would have to be the most significant.

Interesting thread, it's hard to choose just one, as RealOne mentioned, and
surely another you love as much pops up, again, as RealOne realized. He does
have some mighty fine coins and I can understand his difficulty in deciding which
is his favorite.

Now, AnkurJ, I love that Bust Half, and thank you for including the link to the
auction so the OP could verify the date of purchase, please forgive him, he's
getting older (just not as old as I) and his memory is just starting to slip.
That's a marvelous coin, Ankur, but you paid Moon Money for it. When the time
comes to sell, I hope you recoup your money.

Jayman1970 - welcome to the Forums, and that's a great 1833 Reduced Quarter.
Most casual collectors fail to realize that that date is the key to the series. Nice coin !!

Lots of other fantastic coins being shown here.... especially the 1805 Half Eagle... OMG
that is a beauty for an AU 53... Looks nearly mark free. Can't blame you if that was your
only purchase for the year - it would've been mine as well !

I basically just collect Barbers, and there are a half dozen newps I love, it's too
hard to pick just one favorite. Maybe my 1900 Half in PCGS 62. It's almost as
nice as my all time favorite Barber, my 1901 Half PCGS 64+.

I can't pick just one, so I'll give you three. The first is this 1876 Twenty Cent Piece in MS-65. It was so nice I could not resist bidding on it in an auction.

This 1850-C gold dollar in AU-58 is very well struck and totally original.

And this 1853-D gold dollar is a truly exceptional example of a Dahlonega mint product. I would rather own this piece than many pieces that receive Mint State grades. This one is graded AU-58.
