<< <i>I wanted to get this coin reholdered and truviewed. >>

This coin was in a very recent problem free edge view holder so why did you want to get it reholdered?

It doesn't make any sense that you cracked this out to get true-viewed.

Are you sure you didn't monkey around with it while raw before it was regraded?

This is a good thread. The brute facts of the coin are unchanged. It has merely been re-described by another grading team with a slightly different narrative of the coin. Now, somehow, the coin has been transformed. It is suspect - previously cleaned and unsuitable to holder, whereas before it passed the professional purity test, and was perhaps under-graded. Sometimes its really hard to separate yourself from all of re-description and collect based on your own aesthetic. If you cannot, of course, you really benefit from leaving them in the holder. It looks like a pretty nice several centuries old copper.

I do not understand this given that slab labels are always changing. To me this is a huge waste of money. Slabs are a means to an end, not an end to a means. >>

What you are saying is completely rational and correct. But, when they are in my album or drawer it just is more pleasing to see everything in order and looking the same. image

I think the coin would grade if you resubmitted. Might be worth a presidential review, if HRH still does that.

FWIW, I can see the appeal of having "all matching" holders but - because they are constantly changing -- your only best bet would be to "theoretically" complete a collection, all in PCGS holders, and then deliver all at the same time, to be reholdered and sent back to you.

If you're really unlucky, PCGS might switch up label styles, etc. on you before all your pieces are processed. image

One thing hasn't changed, it's a very desirable early cent, to a wide variety of knowledgeable collectors in this arena of US numismatics. image

Absolutely! I would never in a million years do that. Horrible accusation. I wanted it trueviewed for my registry. Thats it. It looks the exact same now as it did when I received it. THere was no reason to "monkey" with it. It looks awesome.

It commonly takes more than one try to get an EAC into a graded holder; for this reason alone I would be very hesitant to crack one out for a re-submission. Just try again a couple of times and it will re-holder.

Thanks Rays. I learned my lesson. Won't ever do it again!

Many of us have dealt with this scenario, in one form or another, over the years. There is no sure thing in cracking out coins and resubmitting, and one should be prepared for all possible outcomes (upgrades, downgrades, nogrades, damage to the coin, and loss of the coin) and take this into consideration, including the emotional and financial implications, when doing so.

Makes sense to me. Much of numismatics is only rational to each of us for different reasons.

it's still the same coin. crack it out again. enjoy it raw for a while. then, submit it again when you have a submission to fill.

It is true. WingedLiberty has a colorful Morgan that was TrueViewed through the plastic.

<< <i>If you would submit it 10 times you would probably get 25% no grades, and 25% same grades and 25% some points higher and 25% some points lower. >>

This, of course, cannot possibly happen with 10 submissions. But let's not pick nits.

    It's a simple workflow, really.
    (1) Resumbit to PCGS
    (2) Did it grade cleanly and get what it deserves? If yes, go to (3) If no, go to (1)
    (3) End

There is no way I'd give up after one strike. That is not how the game is played if you want to come out ahead (or at least close to even).

Another moral of this story: Patience is a virtue.

You already had decent photos of the coin, so having it gone for 6 weeks doesn't seem like the end of the world.
Of course, I'm one of those people who doesn't even check my grades until I open the package. Seems like
most people are more obsessive about this stuff than I...

Wasn't that coin in an old holder though??? That is the only reason PCGS needs to take a TrueView through the plastic...

The coin here was in a newer style holder and to get that TrueViewed it just needed to be sent in for reholder and TrueView. They'd crack it out for you, take the photos and the reholder at the same grade with no risk of downgrade or genuine grading.

Of course, if the OP was trying to save money by including this coin on another order of raw coins (since reholders need a separate form and separate return shipping) and/or hoping for an upgrade, then you don't have the grade guarantee once you crack it!

Next time you might get VF35. Sure it could take 2 or 3 tries but that's the name of the game.

So I resubmitted it. I included in my package the original VF30 cert and a photo of the coin in it and now its back in a VF30.

If the grade doesn't fit, resubmit.

But I'll bet you learned a valuable lesson in the process.

Yep. I won't do that again. But, it also says a lot about the subjectivity and value of plastic.
